04/08/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Carver walks calmly on leash. He was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body, but trying to stay close. Carver was shy during handling, with a fearful body language. He becomes extremely frightened during the tag interaction, tail tucked, yelping and trying to exit room. Carver did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He was not interested in toys or rawhide. Carver was shy during the assessment but he stays close to the assessor. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter. This dog is fearful and needs time to warm up. We also recommend a home without children. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language , mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 3. Dog repeatedly turns quickly away when touched, and repeatedly tries to exit. Dog may be crouching, tail is tucked, mouth closed, body stiff. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide 1. No interest. Dog-dog: With other dogs off-leash, Carver was nervous and approach the friendly dog very briefly sniffs but no real interaction.

A volunteer writes:
I met Carver today and took him for his first walk to the park. He’s a shy, skittish boy who reacts to every sight and sound. For moments he forgets his panic and becomes a dog again, trotting, sniffing and breathing in the fresh air. But, more often than not, he is wide-eyed and quivering as he makes his way through the chaos of the street. Another underexposed, undersocialized youngster who’s trying his best to be brave. Carver needs a slow approach and a quiet place to feel safe. When alone in the backyard, I plop down on the ground and, little by little, Carver slinks over. He slowly places his paw on my knee, winces when I touch him in return, but does not try to flee. We remain still, his face next to mine. Eventually, his nerves get the better of him and he retreats under a nearby bench. I coax only his head out with my high value treat. Then we begin again… I plop, he slinks, we touch. He is all fear, hesitation, and confusion. It is important to note that, in this palpable mix, we have seen no signs of aggression. But, in order to thrive, Carver needs the kind of time we cannot offer. He is a work in progress who has shown signs of the kind of boy he is as he tries his best to trust and relax his guard. In experienced, patient hands, Carver will finally get the chance he deserves.
