11/21/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Carvel (ice cream) makes me think of soft, comforting special treats. Our little imp has a little ways to go before living up to her name, but she’s well on her way. She’s a little pocket pittie in her shiny black coat, white face and freckled ears. Happy to come out for a walk she pulls hard on the leash revealing her stress at being in this strange new place. We head for the backyard so Carvel can be free off leash, and she then shows off her ‘sit’, takes treats gently and explores the pen. When a staff person who loves her comes to give her a treat, Carvel runs to the fence, tail wagging happily and accepting her treats graciously. Carvel LOVES treats and follows me around the pen hoping another will come her way quickly ( it does!). When I stop walking she sits in front of me, her cute little face looking up imploringly just waiting for that treat. Giving chase to a ball for a second, she’s more interested in treats, and then at one point resting her little head on my knee. Anxious and stressed as of this writing, she’s already made a lot of progress in this strange new place. She strikes me as a little lost soul trying to be brave and independent and not sure how to go about making friends. I look forward to seeing her again and hope she’ll be ready to cuddle, but most of all I look forward to seeing her walk out the door, tail wagging and enjoying some treats, with her new person.
11/21/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Carvel pulls hard on the leash. She became overexcited during handling, jumping up, grabbing the leash, redirects to the assessor (air snapping) with her body stiff, growling and did not calm down easily. The behavior team decided to skip the handling part of the assessment for safety reasons. During the resources Carvel was not interested in toys. She rushed in quickly during the dog-dog test, but showed no aggression The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Toy 1: No interest. Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches the helper dog by rushing in with her tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, and lip long or neutral. Helper: A1058331
11/23/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Carvel has not yet been introduced off-leash with other dogs, due to apparent discomfort during handling. When Carvel is introduced to dog through a barrier, she shows moderate interest, with a loose body and wagging “helicopter” tail.
