06/16/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Huck Fin was distracted when entering the assessment, continually sniffing and focusing on other stimuli rather than the assessor. He was focused on objects in the room during handling. During tag, Huck Fin was unresponsive when touched and very distracted by other stimuli in the room but became somewhat aroused, running around the room in a way unconnected to the assessor. He did not stiffen but growled during paw handling. Huck began to eat faster when his food bowl was moved and growled when the assessor attempted to push him out of the food bowl. He showed some concerning behavior during toy and rawhide tests -growling, but did not escalate to a snap or bite to the assess-a-hand. Huck Fin was brought to the care as a stray, initially nervous but allowed handling. Huck was uncomfortable throughout the assessment, whining and constantly displacement sniffing. He showed some concerning behavior during paw handling and growled at the assessor. He also showed potential to guard food, toy and rawhides, growling after each was touched by the assessor, and for that reason we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address this guarding behavior and can extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home. We also recommend that the New Hope Partners be willing and able to give him time to warm up at his own pace and to help him become more comfortable with close handling. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 4. Dog growls. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Food: 4. Dog begins to gulp food, then growls. Toy 1: 4. Dog growls. Rawhide: 4. Dog growls. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, neutral.
