08/22/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Butch has quite a fan club already! Just walk through the halls and see how many people call out their greetings. Amazing! He’s a favorite of the behavior staff as he’s social and playful in group, offering appropriate correction when play gets too rough. I’m told he will be the next ‘greeter helper dog’ — that’s quite a compliment! Butch is stunning in his clean and well-groomed white coat, is likely housetrained, and ignored other dogs (both large and small) as we walked to the park. He didn’t mind being tethered for photos, made soft eye contact as I took some pictures and took his reward treats gently. In the backyard he drank some water from the hose, came into my lap for some hugs, wagged his tail at dogs in an adjoining pen, and lay down froggy style at my feet while I took some notes. He’s easy to be with, happy for attention and some petting, and is the perfect companion with whom to “chill out”. Ask to meet our resident rockstar today, and make him your rockstar!!
08/23/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Butch came to our center as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. He was friendly upon intake, wagging his tail and jumping up to meet new people. Butch whined throughout the SAFER assessment, focused on other stimuli around the room. He whined and pulled out of assessor’s hands at three attempts for Look item. Butch leaned in during Sensitivity item, body soft, tail wagging. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, settling easily at end of game. Butch was focused on trying to exit the room during Squeeze item, he anxiously shrieked and jumped his body away so assessor was unable to hold paw. He vocalized the same way at Flank squeeze. Butch allowed Food bowl to be moved away, and ceased eating/lifted his head when approached by assess-a-hand. He had minimal interest in Toy, sniffing and then turning away. Butch took Rawhide away, keeping a firm grip, body a bit stiff. He was difficult to return to kennel at the end of assessment, requiring several attempts. When off leash with other dogs, Butch engages in vocal running play, he is social but becomes anxious and begins to whine. The Behavior Team feels Butch would do best with an Experienced adopter. He may benefit from obedience classes and crate training to find appropriate ways to help him relax and feel secure and comfortable. Look: 2.
