12/11/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: What would make me chose Bugsy as a new forever best friend? We all have our reasons to add a new member (human, canine or feline) to our family… Dogs mean company, love, a reason to be active and keep going, fun… the list is endless. Our Bugsy has a cute name that fits him well. He is indeed blessed with a gentle and welcoming face. He sits, hopeful at his door and ready at once to go for a walk. He might pull a little, but most dogs do when they are confined, and I can better assess Bugsy while he is free in a pen. Bugsy is a good looking gentleman, well nourished and dressed in a milk and cinnamon coat. His care has not been the best. His nails are long, his coat affected by some kind of dermatitis and he wears a number of calluses. He was found roaming in a park and brought to us as a friendly pooch by the police. Bugsy comes when I call him, sits on command, sometimes jumps for treats and enjoys to being caressed, sitting by and leaning against my legs. He is well mannered in playgroups and is fine when another dog does not want his advances. That is how it should be. All in all, Bugsy seems like a nice dog, one who can benefit from TLC, the safety of a home sweet home and the love of a master. He has all the elements to make a great forever best friend who will always remember that you are the one who was willing to give him a new leash on life. Bugsy is waiting for you at the Manhattan Care Center.
12/09/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bugsy was brought into our center by police after he was left in a park. He allowed all handling during intake and his initial medical exam. Bugsy pulled a bit on leash during his relief walk. He was difficult to position for Look item, but on third attempt allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, tail wagging. Bugsy leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, ears back, mouth closed. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, a bit distracted, jumping up lightly on assessor at end of game. Bugsy did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. He engaged with Toy briefly, but then quickly lost interest. When off leash with other dogs Bugsy takes correction for mounting and then proceeds to explore the yard. The Behavior Team feels Bugsy would do well with an Average adopter. He may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners and not to jump up. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, mouth closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, a bit distracted on second pass, jumps on assessor at end. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, briefly engages but quickly loses interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Bugsy takes correction for mounting and then proceeds to explore the yard.
12/08/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Bugsy is polite and has a calmer playstyle with males and females. He may exhibit sexually motivated behaviors (he is currently unaltered), but he does take correction well. The behavior department believes that Bugsy could go to a home with another dog that is calm and not overly playful. When off leash with other dogs Bugsy attempts to mount the helper dog. He takes correction and then proceeds to explore the yard. 12/9 update: Bugsy greets well then goes off to explore his surroundings. 12/10: Bugsy offers polite greeting to both males and females. He briefly bows and attempts to solicit play from another male dog in the pen. He wanders off when play is not reciprocated.
