12/07/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
12/07/15 19:59 Limited profile given due to nature of intake but it was noted that: Buddy stayed with 2 adults and 2 children, which he only interacted with in the shelter mostly and in the car. Owner stated she noticed separation anxiety when she tried to leave the house in the form of him going by the door and laying down not letting her leave, when she snuck out he kept barking and crying the whole time. She also stated that every time her husband would go by her to give her a hug, Buddy would get aggressive and try to snap at the husband.
11/23/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: No matter how many times I witness a dog feverishly searching for his owner I don’t think I will ever get used to it. It just breaks my heart. š When I took Buddy out of his kennel he searched and searched for his family. Buddy was surrendered to the shelter when a child in the home was allergic to him. Buddy is scared and a bit shy, I took him into the yard to play for a while and all he wanted to do was cuddle and search. After a little bit of time he felt more comfortable with me he very gently took some treats . Buddy is on the small side about 35 pounds and has the most beautiful white coat complemented with brown markings. Buddy needs a new forever home if your interested in meeting Buddy please come to SIACC.
12/09/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Buddy has shown behavior in two different short-term adoptive homes that indicate possible guarding of humans or discomfort with close contact between humans. In a home for 2.5 years, Buddy lived with 2 adults and 2 children, with whom he got along very well. In this home Buddy was described as housebroken, playful, affectionate, and friendly, though he may be uncomfortable with nail trims, with being crated, and may not get along well with some other dogs. In an adoptive home for several days, Buddy was affectionate and playful with his adopters but was reported to act with aggression toward a veterinarian during an exam. This was described as Buddy guarding his owner, but with the information provided we cannot draw any additional conclusions or confirm the behavior. In another home for several days Buddy was attached to the female adopter, vocal when she left the home, and would snap at the male adopter when he moved to hug his wife. Based upon the multiple returns and the aggressive responses to certain people in his two recent homes, at this point we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can further investigate this behaivor and can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address the underlying anxiety and the concerning behaviors. It is in Buddy’s best interest to move into a stable, consistent, and safe home environment with experienced fosters as quickly as possible. 11/17 SAFER: During intake, Buddy was friendly with soft body, allowed all handling. He was a bit nervous upon entering the SAFER assessment area, but tolerated all portions of assessment. Buddy approached helper dog quickly, ears back and tail tucked, but seemed more fearful of surrounding area rather than focused on dog. The Behavior Team feels Buddy would do best with an Experienced adopter. He may benefit from an initial slow approach/slow introduction and first going home to a calm, quiet, structured environment so he can relax and know what to expect in his new home. Look: 1. Eyes averted, ears back, tail down, elaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture, mouth closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Eyes averted, ears back, tail down. Toy: 1. No interest.
