Behavior:
Buddy came to our center when a member of the public was walking their dog and Buddy walked right up to them as a stray. He was a bit nervous upon intake but warmed up quickly and allowed admissions counselor to pick him up. Buddy was a bit timid upon coming out of kennel for his relief walk and required some coaxing. He licked his lips while allowing his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands. Buddy stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, mouth closed, body soft. He was fearful and unresponsive during Tag game, after the first pass he could not be coaxed to walk any more. Buddy did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. He had no interest in Food, Toy, or Rawhide. Buddy did not approach the helper dog, leaning his body slightly away. The Behavior Team feels Buddy would do best in a home with an Experienced adopter who is familiar with small, nervous dogs. He may do best in a calm, quiet, structured environment so he can warm up and feel comfortable at his new home.
Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted, lip lick. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends with coaxing.
Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed.
Food: No interest
Toy 1: No interest.
Rawhide: 1. No interest.
Dog-dog: 2. Dog does not approach the helper do, leans away.
Group Behavior: When off leash with other dogs Buddy is social and playful. He will offer appropriate correction.
