07/30/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Bucky is an trim young man I met a day after his arrival at the care center. He was fast asleep in his kennel and absolutely nothing could wake him up…. Days and days passed and we found each other again… yesterday .Bucky was well awake in his den, waiting right behind his door and ready for a walk. Bucky was surrendered because he was not comfortable with a new arrival in the home, a seven year child who was to stay. As a result, Bucky …had to go. He comes with good words from his former master and is described as an athletic and very active dog. He would be only partially housetrained(I suspect that he was not taken out that much..), playful, friendly, with no handling issues and bark sometimes when left alone. Bucky is usually found resting pretty quietly in his kennel here at the care center. Bucky pulls slightly on the leash and eliminates in a few stops. He can sit on command and comes at the call of his name. Leash free in a pen, he will run after the ball, does not mind me taking it out of his mouth and jumps a lot. He is very excited to be out and wants to make the most of it…Who wants to stay still in a small space at such a young age… In playgroups with other dogs, Bucky does pretty well, greeting politely his kind. Bucky is a young dog who needs an active owner who will take him for daily walk and keep him busy. He seems to like other dogs. A meet and greet is in order…. Bucky is at the Manhattan Care Center, waiting to meet you and leave as your forever best friend.
07/25/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bucky came to us as an owner surrender ron 7/25/15. It was reported by the previous owner that Bucky has been around one 7 year old child in his life, but when introduced Bucky had stiff body language and began to growl. The described Bucky as a playful, confident, pushy and as a dog with a very high activity level. If left home alone Bucky has been known to bark excessively and should be left home with some sort of mental stimulation in the form of chew toys. When entering the behavior room Bucky proved to be very high energy and hard to position during SAFER. He allowed the assessor to complete all tactile assessment items without displaying aggression. Though on the tag test Bucky did consistently body check the assessor. He did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. Bucky took both the toy and rawhide items away with soft body language, and a firm grip. After review of all known behavior information the behavior department believes that Bucky would do best in a home with an experienced owner and no children. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 3. Dog responds with his tail high, ears forward, mouth likely closed for at least half of the assessment item, body a bit tense and body checks the Assessor. Dog is often focused on other stimuli in the room. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the rawhide. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, Bucky is social and greets the other dog politely.
