A volunteer writes: It did not take long, little peanut Brutus, barely a few days at the care center, has already made a name for himself. He is a greeter in playgroups with other dogs. It is no surprise. He is one friendly and sociable six month old, left with us without any comment by his dog sitter as his master never came back for him. Hard to believe that anyone would dispose of a cutie like Brutus whose name does not represent well at all his congenial and enthusiastic personality. Brutus walks nicely on the leash and even eliminates as we entered the yard. He is petite, a bit too thin and wrapped in a coat in various shades of brown. His eyes are sizzling. His mouth is open. His tail is wagging. He is ready for treats, ball games, walks, meeting people and other dogs. He wants to live his youth to the full extent of its span. Brutus is a puppy, of course, carefree and who wants to make the best of whatever presents to him. That is the spirit. Brutus can sit on command (he gives me a perfect sit) and takes dry liver eagerly from my fingers. He is hungry, too skinny and he has a growing body. He runs and jumps after the ball and lets me take it from his mouth to continue the game. After playing quite a bit in the yard and his belly full, Brutus decides that it is time for a rest on my lap and for kisses and hugs. I am tired and I can not agree more. I like Brutus very much. He is tiny, lively, super friendly, good with other dogs and so ready to absorb like a sponge all the teaching you might want to give him. He will make a lovely student and forever best friend . Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center!

BEHAVIOR:
Brutus was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up, tries to solicit attention, in constant movement. He is excited during handling and mouths the assessor at times, with little to no pressure applied and has a soft body throughout. He engages in play, loose body, wags tail, mouth is open, mouths leash and jumps up on the assessor. Brutus ate faster, his body was neutral and he was a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. He was easy to handle when chewing on the toy and he took away the rawhide with a neutral body and was somewhat vocal.
Brutus was surrendered to the care center. Brutus got along well with the other dog in the household and is described as playful and very active. Throughout the assessment, Brutus remained friendly towards the assessor but was in constant movement and would often jump up or mouth the assessor. The Behavior Department recommends Brutus go to an experienced adopter that is prepared to provide him with adequate mental and physical stimulation as appropriate outlets for his energy. Brutus would also benefit from obedience classes to aide in curbing his jumping and mouthing habits. He also kept a firm grip on all resources but was very easy to trade him in order to take away the toy and rawhide, he may benefit from practicing trade up games in the home.
