07/12/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
7/12/15 16:29 Basic information: Brutus a roughly 4 yr. American staff mix. The Owner got him from an unknown breeder; he has owned Brutus for 4 yrs. The owner surrendered Brutus because of personal problems. Brutus has a skin rash on his neck which was seen and treated by a vet in April 2015 and along with his yearly vaccinations. Socialization: Around strangers Brutus is friendly playful. Brutus has lived with 2 6yr children but was never allowed to interact with them. He playful around adults he does not know. Brutus has lived with a cat but has never interacted with the cat. Brutus has bitten the owner’s husband on his hand once because Brutus thought the husband was trying to take his toy away from him. Behavior: The owner stats that Brutus does not like it when some moves her food bowl or treats while she is eating or when someone takes his toys away, he will bark and snap at the person. Brutus likes to be brushed and given bathes but has never had his nails trimmed. When an unfamiliar person or animal approaches a family member or his home he approaches them in a friendly manor though he may bark at them at first. The owner does not know how Brutus is around loud noises such as storms or fireworks. For a new family to know: The owner describes Brutus as friendly, affectionate and playful with a High activity level. His favorite activity is to play fetch with his owner. In the home Brutus tends to follow the owner around the house and is kept mainly indoors. Brutus sleeps on the floor anywhere in the house on a blanket. Brutus was fed Pedigree prime dry and wet dog food two times a day. He is house trained and very rarely has accidents in the home unless he isn’t walked after a while, when outside he goes to the bathroom on or around trees and grass and the sidewalk. Brutus knows the commands “sit “, “leave it”, “Look at me” and “Come here”. For exercise Brutus is used to brisk walks on the leash and twice a day and does pull on the leash lightly. He has never been walked outside off the leash. Brutus has been crate trained and does well in the crate for 3 to 4 hours at a time. Behavior during intake: Brutus was relaxed with lose body when approached by staff. Brutus allowed to be, scanned (-), collared, photographed and placing in dog kennel.
07/23/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: In my eyes Brutus is perfection itself and I’m so madly in love with this darling boy it’s hard to know where to begin…his unbelievably cute face, sociable nature and adoration of other dogs? His obedient ‘sit’, affectionate kisses and sweet, submissive snuggliness? How about his gentle treat-taking, easy leash walking and great toilet training skills? Staff and strangers alike sing his praises and his well-deserved fan club is expanding by the minute! Brutus was purchased as a puppy and lived with the same family his whole life and we’re told he knows additional commands for ‘come here’, ‘look at me’ and ‘leave it’, is crate trained for up to 4 hours and likes to follow his owner around the house. Fetch is a favorite game but Brutus prefers to keep his toys to himself and though I can pet him while they are nearby, it’s best to just wait for him to step away before retrieving as his owner states he can be quite protective of his stuff if he thinks it’s in danger of being ‘stolen’. When another dog approaches our pen Brutus is instantly smitten and puts on an impressive play-bowing, nose-sniffing and butt-wiggling performance for his new buddy and out in the street he hails every passerby as a long-lost friend. Playful, pretty, pocket-sized and the perfect cuddlebug, Brutus is a wonderful little dude custom-made for life as a pampered pet. To meet him once is to love him forever and we’re both hoping that’s exactly what you’ll do!
07/22/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Brutus walks calmly on leash. He was calm and relaxed during handling and easily engages in play, body is loose and wiggly, mouth open. Brutus growled and bit the assess-a-hand during the food bowl test, then continued guarding the food after the assessor moved away. He growled and bit the assess-a-hand during both the toy and the rawhide test. Brutus approaches the helper dog with his body not stiff, tail at spine level, lip long. Brutus was surrender to his owner because of his guarding issues. The owner stated that Brutus does not like it when some moves her food bowl or treats while she is eating or when someone takes his toys away, he will bark and snap at the person”. Brutus during the assessment shows some guarding issues during the food bowl, rawhide and toys test. He may require positive reinforcement behavior modification to address this guarding behavior. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home.
