A volunteer writes: I thought the wind was going to knock him over. I wish I could say I was kidding. Bruce is so thin and frail, that nearly every bone is easily visible; bones that I didn’t know even existed. His spine protrudes from his thin coat, and his eyes look lost in his sunken face. It seemed unlikely that his body could make a spirited defense to the wind gusting around him, and as we walked along, Bruce took every step cautiously. It’s impossible for my heart not to go out to this little guy. Wherever he came from, wasn’t good, not by a long shot. But Bruce isn’t dwelling in the past and on our walk, his only thoughts were geared toward becoming my friend, and managing to get as many treats out of me as possible. It’s no surprise that Bruce was eager to show off his “sit,” garnering him a treat each time. He takes the treats delicately from my hand and is never pushy, though I can see his eyes pleading with me for the next little morsel. When I sat down, he gingerly, came over to me, pressing his paws in my lap and accepting petting as if it was the first time he felt love—and he wanted more. Later, when I saw him in the yard with a staff member, he was pressed against his legs, eyes closed, nearly melting into him as he pet him. Bruce may not have received much love in the past, but he’s more than willing to get his fair share now. He just needs a home that’s willing to provide it to him.
