10/22/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Bridges has pleading eyes, looks like she’s been a mom too many, and has a splotch of red paint on one of her bunny rabbit ears. I wish I could tell you all of the stories I’m sure she has to tell, but I can only tell you the one where she steals my heart! She was a little nervous the first time we met, but even then showed glimpses of what was to come; when I called to her she would wiggle over, but stop herself when she’d almost reached me and walk away. On our next walk, she couldn’t keep it secret any longer — Bridges is actually a lap dog!! As soon as I sit down she’ll make herself at home in my lap and diligently lick my face as if her motherly instincts are kicking in. If I’m standing, she isn’t jumpy or demanding, but follows me around. When I start to tell someone on the opposite side of the fence how smitten I am and kneel towards her, she nearly takes me down with affection, her paws on my shoulders, and I can barely get a word out between kisses! When we’ve encountered other dogs, Bridges has been calm and seems friendly; she’s even been used as a helper dog in playgroup. She seems to have housetraining, walks nicely on leash, and responds to “sit” (but isn’t interested in my treats). Occasionally she seems a little lost, softly whimpering and looking around. There is a sadness about her, but it is contrasted by how comforted she is by company, and how extremely loving she is. She’s cooperative going back in her cage, but isn’t quick to settle — she’ll often stand quietly at the front, constantly trying to make soft eye contact as I pass in and out with her neighbors. Please come meet Bridges at Brooklyn ACC and see if you can be part of her story – she is really something special!
10/21/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bridges came in as a stray, so her past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake it was reported Bridges has loose body language and was also whining, she allowed all handling. During SAFER Bridges came into the assessment room calm and relaxed, she was friendly towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Bridges becomes easily aroused, mouths the rope but quickly de-escalates during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Bridges was easy to handle when engaged with the items. During Bridges medical exam she did try to snap and growl at the handler. In addition, we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and Bridges be given the opportunity to interact at her own pace. The behavior department feels its best she can be suitable for an experience adopter with no children. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 3. Dog becomes easily aroused, mouths rope with tense body language but quickly de-escalates. Squeeze 1 & 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Food: Inconclusive, dog is not eating. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Bridges was the female helper dog today. She tolerated males of various play styles and corrected (snarl, bark, look aways) exhuberant play. Bridges is bouncy and wiggly with some males but today she was focused on something beyond the gate and most of her attention was directed at that.
10/21/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Bridges is social and engages in play with other playful dogs. She will offer correction for pushy behavior. Based on her behavior during playgroup, the Behavior Department recommends that Bridges can go to a home with both male and female dogs. She seems to do well with both playful and non-playful dogs so any playstyle can be considered. ***Bridges is a social group helper dog.*** Bridges is a wiggly, bouncy and exhuberent player. She is symmetrical and receptive in her play communication and also gives clear signals to the other dog to take a break. She is potentially a helper dog. 10/20 update: Bridges has become the female helper dog due to her experienced socialization skills. She is tolerate of males of various play styles and of their sexual solicitations. She gives clear corrections (look away, full body turn and teeth bare). 10/21 update: Bridges was the female helper dog today. She tolerated males of various play styles and corrected (snarl, bark, look aways) exhuberant play. Bridges is bouncy and wiggly with some males but today she was focused on something beyond the gate and most of her attention was directed at that. 10/22 update: Bridges is social, greets politely and engages in play with other playful dogs. She will offer appropriate corrections. 10/23 update: Bridges greets other dogs politely and will attempt to solicit play. She offers appropriate corrections for pushy behavior. 10/24 update: Bridges is social, engages in running play briefly and offers appropriate corrections. 10/27 update: Bridges continues to be a helper dog. She plays selectively and gives corrections for behavior she is uncomfortable with. 10/28, 10/29, 10/30 update: Bridges greets other dogs politely and will attempt to solicit play. She will engage in running play with other playful dogs and offers appropriate corrections. 10/31 update: Bridges is social and engages in running play with other playful dogs. She is respectful of dogs that do not want to play and will offer appropriate corrections. 11/1 , 11/2 update: Bridges was anxious and mouthy today. She primarily forcused on her leash rather than play with other dogs.
