BLUE SPARKLE – A1031986 – MANHATTAN, NY
Safe 4-15-2015 Manhattan
****FAMILY DOG LOOKING FOR A FMAILY**** A volunteer writes: His soft expression and glam rock name almost had me fooled for a minute but Blue Sparkle is actually a beautiful blue nose BOY and he’s quite happy for me to tie a blue bandanna round his neck to prove it! Surrendered to our care when his Landlord decided pets weren’t welcome, Blue really is a classic ‘family dog’ and though he’s anxious and lonely without his people, he’s still trying to put his best paw forward by welcoming new visitors with a softly wagging tail and even performing admirably on his behavior assessment. Blue lived his entire life in harmony with 4 young human siblings (ages 3, 4, 5 and 9) and we’re told he was affectionate and very tolerant with them, especially his ‘twin’, the little 3 year old. He tailored his play style to the size of his playmates, exuberant with the older kids and gentle with the younger ones, and though he’s a bit hand-shy with me, when another dog appears in the pen next door Blue is overjoyed to meet him and does the most adorable little hind leg kicks in his eagerness to get the party started. He’ll run after a ball or join in a game of chase and when his fleeting, beautiful smile shows itself his face truly does light up with joy. Whether on leash or off no one is sweeter or easier than Blue, he walks very well, takes treats nicely and as per his former owner, he seems to be extremely house trained too. He’s even visited with cats before and simply ignored them – the perfect gentleman! Blue would love to be part of a family again and whatever the size or shape of your ‘pack’ he’d make a wonderful new addition. Is there room in your heart for one more?

04/02/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
04/02/15 22:01 BASIC INFO Blue Sparkle’s family got him from a breeder almost 4 years ago. They surrendered him because of conflicts with their landlord and lack of time. PEOPLE Blue lived with children that are currently 3, 4, 5, and 9. He’s affectionate and very tolerant with them, especially the youngest one. He plays exuberantly with the older children but more gently with the smaller ones. He’s friendly with new people and hasn’t bit anyone. ANIMALS Blue Sparkle is relaxed and playful with dogs he meets on walks. He plays gently with small ones and somewhat rough with larger ones if they play rough too. PERSONALITY Blue Sparkle’s family describes him as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, excitable, mellow, and medium-high energy. He follows his family around. He likes balls (basketballs, soccer balls, tennis balls) and plays tug and chase. HABITS Blue lived inside. He had a pop-up crate that was kept open for him. Sometimes he slept there and other times he slept on his owner’s bedroom floor. He ate dry Taste of the Wild food. He went for brisk walks and runs and pottied anywhere outside. TRAINING Blue is housetrained and doesn’t have accidents. He’s well-behaved when home alone. BEHAVIOR Blue has no known behavior issues. He enjoys being brushed. He doesn’t mind when someone takes his food/bone/toy, moves him off furniture, holds/restrains him, or wakes him up. He’s afraid during baths so his owner wet and rinsed him with the hose while he was in his crate. He’s friendly with most strangers that approach his home/family. If people come over that are afraid of him and are behaving erratically, he watches them with his ears perked but doesn’t bark, etc. Once he was tethered in the front yard with his family and a stranger came over and touched the youngest child. Blue barked at him. He doesn’t mind storms. INTAKE Blue approached and sniffed me. He wagged his tail while I pet him. When I asked him to sit for a treat he mouthed my hand to get the treat. After a few minutes in Admissions, he lied on his side on the floor and was quiet. When a small dog came to the other side of the room he soft barked for 1-2 minutes and then ignored her. He appeared alert but neither soft or tense bodied and wagged his tail at spine level while I pet, scanned (negative), collared, and photographed him.

04/04/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Blue Sparkle pulls hard on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Blue Sparkle was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He became stiff and uncomfortable during paw handling. Blue Sparkle did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. Blue Sparkle was not interested in toys or rawhide. Blue Sparkle was surrender to us. According to the owner he lived with children that are currently 3, 4, 5, and 9. He’s affectionate and very tolerant with them, especially the youngest one. He plays exuberantly with the older children but more gently with the smaller ones. He doesn’t mind when someone takes his food/bone/toy, Blue Sparkle was a bit uncomfortable during the paw handling. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide 1. No interest. Dog-dog: With other dogs off-leash, Blue Sparkle was tolerant and a bit playful around other dogs.
