04/20/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
04/20/15 19:28 Basic Information BK is a 5yr old Pit Bull mix that has no past or current medical issues according to the owner. Social Life & Personality BK comes from a home with children and interacted with them in a friendly gentle manner. BK is respectful and tolerate of other dogs. According to the owner he can be selective on what dogs he chooses to get along with and this applies to larger breed dogs. BK gets along with all small breed dogs and has lived with them. BK has lived with a cat for a short period of time but in this time he did get along with the cat. BK was indoor/outdoor dog that spent most of his time in the home. He has free choice with a pet door at his disposal. BK is described to be friendly, playful, and excitable with a high activity level. Behavior Issues BK has guarding issues when it comes to food and the owner explained that when you go to take food from him he will bark as a warning. He has never bitten, growled, or lunged at anyone over his food. When the warning was given the owner just let him eat. This doesn’t apply to treats or toys and you can takes these items without issue. The owner said BK loves to recieve baths but it can be a struggle due to the size of the dog. The owner isn’t sure how he will respond to a nail trim due to never attemting to do so. BK will allow you to brush him coat and this can be done with no problems. For a New Family to Know BK doesn’t know any basic commands exept for stay. He went for slow walks on a leash daily as well as put in to the yard for daily exercise. BK doesn’t have much interest in dog toys but will play with a ball if you give hime one. When in the home BK is the type to follow you around seeking attention. When left alone in the home he is well behaved and this applies to the yard as well. He might bark every here and there but thats all. BK was brought up eating both wet/dry food and the brand the owner gave was Pedigree.

05/06/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: BK is absolutely stunnnnnnning!!!! He is a big boy, he has black coat with brown undertones. It’s really obvious when he is in the sun, and it is gorgeous! When BK first arrived at the shelter he was scared, but has since settled in. He is participating in playgroup and is making a lot of new doggy friends. BK walks very well on leash and takes treats gently from my hand. He goes potty as soon as I take him out of the kennel, indicating he is most likely house broken. I love this boy and I know you will too. If you are interested in giving BK his forever home please come to Staten Island Animal Care and Control and meet him.

05/05/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
BK came to our center as an owner surrender due to landlord issues. It is reported he lived with a young child, played gently with visiting children and is friendly towards strangers. The owner notes that BK barks when food is taken away but has never escalated beyond barking, the owner also notes that food was immediately returned when BK would bark. He required a bit of pressure to lift his head from the food bowl during SAFER, but here as well he did not escalate his warnings. BK pulls hard on leash. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands for Look item. BK accepted touch during Sensitivity item with soft body and wagging tail, vocalizing slightly towards the end of item. He followed at the end of leash during Tag with soft body, but did not engage in play. BK pulled his paw back quickly both times during Squeeze item. He lifted his head from the food bowl after a bit of pressure from the assess-a-hand. BK had minimal interst in toy and rawhide. The Behavior Team feels BK would do best with an Experienced adopter, due to his size and strength. BK may also benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners. We do advise that future adopters be aware of the reported mild guarding behavior and be prepared to safely manage it in a home environment. We recommend teaching drop and trade-up games, and we advise against removing food from BK while he is eating so he does not continue to rehearse this behavior. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1/2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog smells, then turns away. Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog may smells, licks, then turns away. Dog-to-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, Bk is tolerant of other dogs with more energy and will engage in short play. Bk does very well with both male and female dogs.
