Basic Information: BJ is a 7 year old neutered male Shih Tzu and Dachshund mix. Owner stated BJ was bred at home. Owner stated BJ due to originally owner passing and family can’t care for him any longer.
Social Life and Personality: BJ been around majority of adults and behavior is unsure around children because the only child he been around is an adult now. Owner stated BJ is afraid of people and shy. BJ lived with many dogs in his life including Bear A1051587 and BJA1051588. Owner stated BJ is playful, respectful and tolerant toward them but they are not bonded pairs. Owner is unsure how BJ will act with other doges because they usually go in the yard for exercise or to use the bathroom. BJ lived with a cat for a certain amount of time and he is respectful and tolerant towards them. He’s mostly indoors and activity level is high. Owner describes BJ as playful, independent and friendly.
Behavior Issues: BJ has never bitten or scratched anyone owner stated. BJ allows owner to touch her toys, food and treats. BJ isn’t bothered by taking baths but doesn’t allow to be brushed. He barks when unfamiliar people approach the house or family member.
For a New Family to Know: BJ is trained to use the bathroom outdoors but will do it indoors if newspaper is put down. BJ only command he knows is inside the house. If BJ goes on a walks he doesn’t goes past the block because he is scared of noises. BJ doesn’t play with toys anymore and usually just stay in his favorite spot. He is well behaved when home alone and when left alone in the yard. BJ eats wet and dry food twice a day.
Intake Behavior: Upon intake BJ was tense and barked when unfamiliar people came around him. He scanned negative for a microchip and allowed handling when approached slowly.
SAFER: NEW HOPE ONLY
BJ previously lived with 1 adult and only been around adults and behavior is unsure around children. It was stated by the owner lived with 2 other dogs in the household. The owner mentioned BJ is playful, respectful and tolerant toward the other dogs but they are not bonded, he also lived with a cat for a certain amount of time and he is respectful and tolerant towards the cat. It was report by the owner BJ has a high activity level, house trained and is well behaved when home alone. The owner describes BJ as playful, pushy, independent and friendly.
At intake BJ was tense and barking, he allowed handling with a slow approach. During SAFER BJ came into the assessment room nervous and fearful, not all handling items were able to be conducted as BJ tried to bite the assessor on the Look item. He displayed no interest in any of the resource items during this portion of the assessment. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with a rescue who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time.
Food: No interest.
Toy 1: No interest.
Rawhide: 1. No interest.
Dog-to-dog: When off leash with other dogs BJ greets politely but is more interested in exploring his surroundings.
PLAYGROUP:

9/17 update: BJ is tolerant of interaction but spends most of his time exploring his surroundings.
9/17 update: BJ greets well and will continue to explore the yard and approach the other dogs to sniff.
9/19 update: BJ greets other dogs briefly but mostly explores his surroundings.
