BIG MAMA – A1035389

A volunteer writes:

Big Mama is a sweet-faced, gentle-hearted girl made old before her time by too much food and not enough vetting and while her spirit is ready to take on the world, she is literally weighed down by the mistakes of her past. Eager to leave her kennel, she waits right at the door for a chance to toddle out and enjoy some sunshine and her dark eyes light up when she sees my leash and realizes her turn is here. We slowly make our way up the stairs and through the yard as Big Mama stops frequently to sniff, explore and meet new friends of both the two- and four-legged variety with lovely ladylike manners. Though she can be a bit hand-shy around her head my petting is appreciated with a smile and when I sit and call her over she comes as quickly as she is able, especially once she realizes I have tasty treats to offer! The large mass on her haunch is enough to make everyone who sees her ‘awww’ in sympathy but other than a rippling of her back when I lightly touch it, Big Mama isn’t letting this intruder get in her way and she’ll sit or lay down with no apparent discomfort. When it’s time to return to her den she uses her bulk to advantage and stops like a dead weight right in the kennel doorway, making it clear she’d much rather stay outside where the people are than return to her lonely vigil. If Big Mama could talk (imagine a warm yet commanding southern accent) she would surely say ‘come see about me’ and though she’s too polite to mention it, I’ll add the ASAP! Life may have dealt her some setbacks but with proper vet care, a healthy diet and plenty of walks in the fresh air she loves, Big Mama’s middle age could still be her best years yet.
