06/27/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
06/27/15 18:03 Basic Info: Betty is a 2yr old female gray & white American Staffordshire terrier who was born at home and whom is being surrendered due to the owner going through some personal problems. Betty was last seen at a veterinarian last year. Betty has no known illness or injuries. Socialization: Around strangers Betty’s behavior is unknown. She’s only lived with her family and spent time in their yard. When she’s walked outside she barks and or ignores people and dogs, sometimes she’ll growl at other dogs also. Betty lived with a 10yr old & a 12yr old. She was relaxed/playful and played gently, exuberantly and sometimes would get a little rough from excitement. She lived with her mother who she was relaxed, playful and respectful of and played gentle, exuberantly and somewhat a little rough with. She’s never lived with or seen cats. Betty has never bitten/scratched any person or animal. Behavior: Betty hides and or barks during thunderstorms/fireworks. Betty isn’t bothered by the following: having her food/food bowl, toys or treats touched/moved, being moved off of furniture, being held/restrained, being disturbed while resting/sleeping, being given a bath or brushed. The owner hasn’t trimmed her nails. If someone unfamiliar approaches the home/family Betty will bark at them. For a New Family to Know: Betty is described as friendly, playful and excitable. Her activity level is high, she loves going/being outside. When the owner is home Betty follows them around. She likes any kind of toy (ball, stuffed, squeaky, etc) but will destroy mostly all of them. She enjoys games of fetch, chase & wrestling. She’s mostly an indoor dog. She sleeps in her crate with the door closed. She eats Pedigree dry food 3x a day. She’s house trained and only “goes” outside. When left alone home or in the yard she’s well behaved. Betty’s known commands are “sit”, “come” & “stay”. For exercise she’s in the yard and or walked 2x a day for about 30mins each time on brisk walks where she pulls on the leash sometimes. Intake Behavior: Betty stayed by her owner’s side, when approached she lip licked and barked at the admissions counselor. She had a wiggly body at times and accepted the treats. The owner assisted with the scanning (-), collaring, taking her pictures & placing her into the kennel to minimize stress for Betty.
07/04/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Betty has led the life of a pampered little girl surrounded by only her family which included two children ages 10 and 12 with whom she was relaxed and playful. She never met anyone outside of her people so it’s understandable that she’s a bit shy and confused by her change in circumstance. Not happy in her kennel, she’ll bark when approached, but once outside with someone she deems a friend, she’s loving and affectionate, giving kisses and rolling over for belly rubs. She pulls on the leash as we begin our walk but then settles into a nice pace, ignoring other dogs we pass in the park. Off leash in the yard she greets a small dog with curiosity and easy body language, and we’re told by her former family that other than her own mother she’s had no experience with other dogs. We’re also told that she’s well behaved when left home alone, sleeps in her crate at night, is housetrained, knows ‘sit’, ‘come’ and ‘stay’, is active and loves being outside. Betty loved chasing a ball but doesn’t know retrieve (her new family can teach her that), and she lay down at my feet froggy style while I took some notes. She’s a chunky mama, well fed, her coat gleams and her face smiles. She’ll need a slow introduction to the world in general, but is eager to learn and make new friends. Will you be the lucky one to make her yours? A volunteer updates: Our little hippo, as we fondly call her, has made new friends, has learned there is a world outside her former family who will love her, stroke her, snuggle with her, give her treats, take her for walks and enjoy her company. While we can do all of that for her at the shelter, it’s a temporary stop in what needs to be her happily ever after. She may still need time to learn and trust her new people but she will. If she can do it with us in the chaos and strangeness of her current situation, imagine how well she will do in the comfort of a new home. Slow and easy, Betty is finding her way. Will you be her next and final chapter?
06/30/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Betty was a bit difficult to remove from her kennel (giving a low growl and barking at the leash) but once she is out she pulls hard on the leash. She was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body, but trying to stay close. Betty was shy during handling with a fearful body language. She was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Betty was not interested in food, toys or rawhide. Betty was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not playful. Betty was surrender to us. According to her previous owner mentioned that Betty behavior is unknown around strangers. She’s only lived with her family and spent time in their yard. When she’s walked outside she barks or ignores people and dogs, sometimes she’ll growl at other dogs also Betty lived with a 10yr old & a 12yr old. She was relaxed/playful and played gently, exuberantly and sometimes would get a little rough from excitement. She lived with her mother who she was relaxed, playful and respectful of and played gentle, exuberantly and somewhat a little rough with. The owner stated that Betty isn’t bothered by the following: having her food/food bowl, toys or treats touched or moved. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter. Betty is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, shy body language , mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food. No interest. Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide 1. No interest. Dog – dog 1. Dog approaches the helper, soft body, tail neutral, but not playful. Helper:A1034218
