A volunteer wrote: Betty’s curious, inquisitive nature is perfectly framed by her mis-matching ears. One always hangs low, while the other goes straight up when she sees or hears something exciting. It makes for a really adorable expression. She loves to explore and smell and hear new things, but doesn’t seem at all fearful of them. Betty is sweet and quietly affectionate–if you stop walking and start petting her, she will roll over on her back and try to get as many belly rubs out of you as she can, even if you’re in the middle of the sidewalk! Betty walks well on the leash and seems calm and house-trained. She deserves a great home with someone who will return all the love she has to share.
05/22/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Betty did well on her SAFER assessment but has shown some concerning behavior in the care center. When approached by a caretaker in the kennel she initially was loose-bodied and interactive. Once out her kennel Betty can be seen immediately trying to rush toward other kennels with dogs in them. It was observed that Betty would begin to growl, snarl, and lunge at other dogs in their kennels making her difficult to handle and she did not calm down easily. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with an Experienced adopter who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time. 4/22/15 Betty pulls hard on the leash and was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up, licked hands and face. She was excited throughout the assessment but was easily positioned and had a loose, wiggly body. She engages in play, loose body, wags tail, mouth is open. She was a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had soft body language. She engaged playfully with the toy and allowed it to be relinquished to the Assessor and had no interest in rawhide. Betty came to the care center as a stray; upon intake she was calm and allowed for all handling. During the assessment Betty did not show any concerns. She is an active dog and has an ample amount of energy. The Behavior Department believes she can go to an average home that can provide her with appropriate mental and physical stimulation. She would likely benefit from working on her leash manners as well. Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed or back. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with her tail down, body neutral. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy: 1. Dog engages with the toy playfully, will relinquish toy to you. Rawhide: 1. No interest.
