07/02/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/02/15 14:57hrs Bernard appears to be a Staffordshire black and white, around 1 year of age and he was found as a stray dog. His finder kept him overnight. The finder stated that Bernard allows petting and all handling. Bernard interacted with a four year old child in the finder’s home. He played gently allowing the child to pet him while lying down next to her. Bernard interacted with a Yorkshire terrier in the finder’s home. He approached the small dog slowly, tail wagging and tried to sniff the dog. The finder didn’t allow them to play together. Bernard appeared to be house trained and used wee-wee pads in the home. During the intake process Bernard approached the Admissions Counselors with a soft body and wagging tail. He took treats softly from the Admissions Counselor hands and knew the command sit. He allowed collaring, scanning for a microchip (negative) and photographing without showing aggressive behavior. Shayla Mouzon

A volunteer writes: Bernard is very puppy like! Well is is only one year old…What a cutie ..Dressed in a shiny jet black tuxedo, elegant, well groomed…An adorable youngster. Bernard came with an injury to one of his paws. He seems to have all forgotten about it, runs, jumps and thinks about one thing..having fun, enjoying his yard time, other dogs , the ball and may be me, his caretaker. I certainly love his company. Bernard walks well on the leash, even eliminates once out of the building, comes when called and sits on command. He is quite excited seeing other dogs and playbows to males and females like he was submitting to a god or a goddess…He even barks…Let’s meet, let’s go to the other pen..A friend is waiting for me…Bernard is a friendly and sociable character, a nice, smart looking and good young dog who will make a pleasant and loving family pet . Come and meet Bernard at the Manhattan Care Center and make him your forever best friend.
07/06/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bernard was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment. He continually jumped up on and mouthed the assessor, making it difficult to position him throughout the assessment. He engages in play, loose body, wags tail, mouth is open but begins to play tug-o-war with the leash and is a bit difficult to distract. Bernard did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He kept a firm grip on both the toy and rawhide but had a loose, wiggly body. Bernard was brought to the care center as a stray; his founders kept him in the home overnight and reported that he allowed all handling and played gently with the 4 year old child in the home, allowing the child to pet him while he lied down next to her. Throughout the assessment, Bernard displayed a high energy level, is quick to use his mouth in play and has poor body awareness, resulting in him mouthing handlers with light to moderate pressure. The Behavior Department recommends Bernard go to an experienced home that can provide him with positive behavioral modification to help correct his playful jumping and mouthing. Bernard would likely benefit from obedience classes as well and should be provided mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. Look: 2.
