Basic Information Benji is a 6 month old black an white male American Pitbull mix. The owner purchased him at a pet store when he was 3 months old. Because of limited space after moving, the owner is surrendering the dog. Benji appears to be in good health, as the owner reported getting all vaccinations done and not observing health problems at this time, with the most recent vet visit in April 2015. Socialization Benji is known to be very playful with strangers as well as children. He has spent time with very young children, ranging in age from 1-3 years old. Benji is relaxed and gentle in his play with both adults and children. He has not spent time with other animals. Benji has no history of biting or scracting others, including both humans and other animals. Behavior The owner reported no behavioral issues at this time. Owner stated that Benji is friendly when touched, handled, groomed and redirected including when his food is touched, toys are taken away, and when he is pulled off of furniture. For A New Family to Know Benji is described as a friendly, playful, and affectionate dog who is great company. The owner stated that their favorite thing about Benji is that he can tell when they are sad. The owner reports that he has very high energy and loves to run around and play with others. Benji plays fetch and tug with a variety of toys including balls as well as stuffed and squeky toys. Benji is mostly house-trained, usually going potty on grass, but is trained to go on a wee-wee pad inside the home. The owner reports that he will not go off of the wee-wee pad. Benji only eats dry food, eating a full bowl at 10am, and a half a bowl at 4pm and 8pm. He loves Science Diet #1. He has not been introduced to wet food yet and does not eat human food. When the owner is out, Benji is well behaved but will start to whine and cry if left alone for more than 3 hours. He does well in the crate, for a maximum of 1 hour. Benji goes to sleep around 11pm every night in a dog bed and will usually wake up around 7am to go potty. He understands the command of “sit,” and only in Spanish. Benji would do well in a family home where he can run and play often as well as gets lots of attention and affection. Behavior During Intake Benji was very energetic during the intake, intiating play with the counselors. He presented with a loose, wiggly body and wagging tail. Benji allowed all handing by counselors.
05/27/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: On a walk outside, Benji showed that – – for a young dog – – he seemed relatively familiar with the boundaries of leash walking; not straining at the leash during much of the walk, unless it was to pull over excitedly for something he wanted to sniff. Benji was able to focus and respond to a “sit” cue, while conditioned with treats. His body language appeared to me to be comfortable and unchanged with petting on head, shoulders, back, or chest. All and all, Benji struck me as becoming quickly comfortable with me as a stranger and able to enjoy as the sunshine and the breeze worked their springtime magic.
