10/23/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bella came in as a stray, so her past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake it was reported Bella was receptive to introduction, she allowed all handling. During SAFER Bella came into the assessment room calm and quiet, she was a bit social towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Bella follows the handler but a bit distracted during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Bella was easy to handle when engaged with the items. Bella can be fearful and timid at times and her body posture is low when she hears loud noises around her. Bella has been showing fearful behavior. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Bella is more comfortable and settled in a home environment, so the behavior department feels she can be suitable for an experience adopter with no young children. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body tense, mouth closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, but a bit distracted. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. She lifts her head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog smells, then turns away. Dog-dog: When on leash, Bella is moderately fearful entering the yard and the pen. Her movements are slow and stiff and her head is low. She greets the helper dog very briefly and then moves to the other side of the pen. She began hypersalivating. Due to her fearful postures and behavior we did not open the gate since our helper dog today is high energy.
10/21/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Bella is social and engages in play with both males and females. She can become a bit pushy when playing. Based on her behavior during playgroup, the Behavior Department recommends that Bella can go to a home with both male and female dogs. She seems to do well with other playful dogs so we recommend she be placed with other tolerant, playful dogs. Bella is moderately fearful entering the yard and the pen. Her movements are slow and stiff and her head is low. She greets the helper dog very briefly and then moves to the other side of the pen. She began hypersalivating. Due to her fearful postures and behavior we did not open the gate since our helper dog today is high energy. 10/23 update: Bella greets the other dog politely and begins to playbow while offering a submissive grin. 10/29 update: Bella is social, greets other dogs politely and will attempt to solicit play. 10/30 update: Bella is social and will attempt to solicit play.
