08/19/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
08/19/15 16:36HRS Bella has been cared for by her finder for the past month. She is being surrendered because her finder is no longer able to care for her. SOCIAL LIFE & PERSONALITY Bella is described as a playful, affectionate and high energy dog. She has interacted with a 5 year old child and played somewhat rough because she would jump onto the child and attempt to lick her. The finder stated that she doesn’t realize her own strength. She has not interacted with other animals in her finder’s care but when she noticed other dogs; she would attempt to approach to sniff them. BEHAVIOR. Bella wasn’t bothered by her food or toys being taken from her. Her finder stated that she would whine and cry when she was left alone. She was friendly towards visitors allowing them to pet her. She appears to be house trained and was accustomed to being walked in the back yard for about 15 minutes at a time and three times a day. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW Bella is an affectionate dog that loves playing. She likes toys like squeaky balls and playing in the yard off leash. She was well behaved when left alone in the yard. She was free fed dry dog food. DURING INTAKE Bella was panting and walking around in circles but allowed handling. When she was petted, she would attempt to jump up onto the counselor and lick her hands and face. She was collared, scanned for a microchip (negative) and photographed without incident.
08/24/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Bella means beautiful, and she certainly is that, but this silver-coated cutie is so much more than just another pretty face. For starters she seems extremely house trained and pees a river as soon as we step out the door, and after a short tuckering-out period she walks very nicely on leash too, quite the feat for a pup with as much joie de vivre as Bella! Like a little jumping bean, as soon as I unleash her she wants to be up and on me, frantically hugging and kissing and practically trying to climb into my arms which though endearing (not to mention flattering) is a bit too forward for a first date! Luckily for me, Bella’s as smart as she is gorgeous and producing a treat from my pocket and asking politely gets me a nice ‘sit’ and ‘stay’ before she gently mouths her reward from my hand. Tennis balls are for chasing and skinning but on the rare occasion one drops from her mouth I’m allowed to pick up the ball (or what’s left of it) with ease, no guarding to be seen. Bella performed well in playgroup and during our time together she met a big bullie boy through the fence with happy tail wags and nose snuffles. She did ‘get into it’ with an anxious, barky female who challenged her… until another staffer came over and both little ladies immediately forgot their bickering and stood up side by side to say hello! A wee bit of polish to her manners and some good nutrition to fill out that girlish figure and this Princess-in-waiting is going to be the belle of the ball in no time. A poet once said ‘beauty is a light in the heart’ and while our Bella may be all grown-up she still has the affectionate, playful and happy heart of a puppy. Welcome her home and let that beautiful love light shine for you!
08/23/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bella came to our center via a building’s superintendent after being abandoned in an apartment. Superintendent cared for Bella for a month before surrender, reporting she is affectionate and playful, playing somewhat rough with the family’s 5 year old child. It is reported Bella would jump up in attempts to lick the child, not realizing her own strength. Bella has not interacted with other animals while in Superintendent’s care. It is reported Bella would whine and cry if left alone. During intake, Bella was panting and walking in circles but allowed all handling. If petted during intake, she would jump up onto counselor to lick hands and face. Bella jumped up to lick assessor’s face during Look item. She leaned in, mouth open, tail wagging during Sensitivity item. Bella followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, tail wagging. She mouthed assessor’s hand during first Squeeze attempt, no pressure. Bella pulled her paw back on second Squeeze attempt. Bella lifted her head out of the Food bowl once assess-a-hand was applied to her cheek. She had a firm grip on Toy and playfully engaged with a loose, wiggly body. Bella had minimal interest in Rawhide. When off leash with other dogs, Bella is anxous. She is tolerant of greeting, but will eventually whine and vocalize while attempting to exit. The Behavior Team feels Bella would do well in an Experienced home. She may benefit from obedience classes to learn focus and body awareness as well as not to jump up on people. Bella may do well with daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise and play, as well as durable Toys such as Kongs and Nylabones to positively direct her high energy and enthusiasm. Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth, tail wag. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, wagging. Squeeze 1: 2. Calmly allows the food to be moved, lifts head when hand applied to cheek. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Bella is anxous.
