06/01/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Bella is truly a work of art. She might be more of a Picasso than a Van Gogh though; her quirky facial features channel that surreal effect associated with the artist’s work. One eyebrow on her left eye, always seeming to be raised up in a question…”Walk me next?” or “Is that treat for me?” perhaps she is asking. Her mouth has an extreme overbite, to the point that her tongue sometimes hangs out of the side and her lips always looks pursed. Her spots are asymmetrical and frankly, when she walks she brings to mind a Guernsey cow, slightly over weight and a little bit awkward. But these idiosyncrasies are exactly what has led Bella to be one of the most revered residents by volunteers and staff alike. But there’s more to Bella than her beauty. She has a lovely cage presence, and is always waiting patiently for her turn. Though she sometimes pulls on the leash (she has a zest for getting out of the building as fast as she can!) she is very easy to handle, and keeps an immaculate kennel, always “going outside.” At times, she will play with toys, but she’s much more interested in staying nearby her friends. When I sit on the bench, she hoists herself up, right next to me, sitting close, sneaking in an occasional kiss. If you saw us from behind, you might think we were just two people just enjoying a nice afternoon! Bella is appropriate with other dogs, and her previous owner even indicates that she loves the little ones-and every time we pass a small dog, she always delicately sniffs them through the fence. She knows sit, stay and give paw and given her food motivated personality, who knows what else she can be taught!? There’s no need to go to a fancy museum to view a masterpiece, come meet Bella today!
05/23/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bella previously lived with two adults, and was said to be respectful and relaxed around everyone she meets. Bella was reported to be relaxed and respectful towards small dogs, but when interacting with dogs her size she tends to be somewhat rough with them. Bella was described as friendly affectionate, mellow, excitable and playful. Her activity level was said to be a medium, and she was reported to be well behaved when home alone, and successfully housebroken. During re-SAFER Bella continues to be sociable towards the assessor, and maintained a loose body posture during all SAFER handling items as well as the tag interaction. However the response to having resources removed was stronger in this re-SAFER, and we recommend potential adopters be comfortable with safely managing resource guarding, should she show this behavior in a home. We recommend teaching “Drop” and trade up games and never removing anything from Bella without trading for something of equal or higher value or rewarding her for relinquishing an item. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth open for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Squeeze 1 : 2. Dog gently places her open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Food: 4. Dog muzzle punches assess-a-hand and lip curls. Toy: 4. Dog muzzle punches assess-a-hand and lip curls. Rawhide: 4. Dog lip curls. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Bella engages in rough play and will appropriately correct puppy play.
