06/30/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
06/30/15 17:33 Beauregard was found running in the street. He was brought to ACC. His finders dragged him inside, causing his paws to bleed. He was tense but allowed us to switch his leashes. He wouldn’t walk with us and thrashed at the end of his leash. We muzzled and carried him, during which he didn’t resist.
07/02/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Some dogs wear their boo-boos on the outside; dirty, scratched or thin, you can tell their life hasn’t been easy just by looking at them…and then there are dogs like Beauregard. A beautiful youngster who appears to have led a charmed existence, he cuts a fine figure in his soft, silky coat and his big eyes are bright as pennies but from the moment I try to leash him it’s clear that Beau’s previous life was ‘sheltered’ to the worst extreme. He’s happy to lick treats from my outstretched hand but ducks, dives and growls in fear whenever the leash comes near and it takes a little patience and a lot of luck before I finally manage to lasso him. He climbs warily from his den and slowly makes his way past the other kenneled dogs, clearly interested in meeting new friends but too timid to do more than lightly sniff near their doors and once we hit the yard he really decides to put the brakes on. Is there anything sadder than a puppy too scared to go outside and play? My heart aches for Beau but he needs this more than he knows so I harness him up and we half-walk, half-drag ourselves over to a pen. He’s such a gentle soul and never objects as I dress him in a bandanna, pet him all over and even kiss him on the cheek but no matter how much cajoling I do or how many treats I offer, he’s quite literally frozen with fear and doesn’t move his feet an inch for a good 10 minutes. I get out my camera and he just stands there, ducking his head back and forth as I snap away. Another volunteer comes to visit and still he doesn’t budge. Only when a fellow dog passes by does Beau ‘snap out of it’ and trot up and down the fence line for a bit before leading me on a merry chase as I try to re-leash him. A beautiful, bruised soul in need of some serious TLC, Beau is still very young and he’s got a lifetime left to learn about all the good things the outside world has to offer. In the caring hands of an experienced adopter (and perhaps the patient paws of a doggie sibling?) I can easily picture him coming out of his shell and transforming into the happy, playful boy he was always meant to be. Miracles do happen and if you’re a patient, loving and dog-savvy person then you just might be the angel Beauregard is waiting for…
07/03/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Beauregard was a bit difficult to remove from his kennel his body looks hunched, with his tail tucked between his rear legs and his ears flattened back on his skull. Once he was out he walks with a low body language. He was fearful and attempted to get away from the handler during some items of the assessment. Beauregard was shy and nervous during handling, with fearful body language. He became very fearful while playing tag. Beauregard did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He was not interested in toys or rawhide. Beauregard was fearful during the assessment he needs an adopter who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. Beauregard has been showing fearful behavior and needs time to warm up to the handler. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Beauregard is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. We also recommend a home without children. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful; his tail is low and not moving.
