08/25/15 13:32 BASIC INFORMATION: Bear is a Doberman Pinscher/ American Pit bull terr, chocolate & tan in color. Bear is 12 yrs old & neutered, he has developed some masses around his torso area and has a small growth on his front left limb. Bear has no known health issues & was adopted through a shelter. Owner is surrendering Bear due to moving to a residence that does not allow pets. SOCIALIZATION: Bear is relaxed & playful around strangers, he has not been exposed to children & plays gently with adults. Bear may display protective behavior if a stranger suddenly approaches owner, he will growl & bark. Bear has not lived with other animals. When he passes another dog in the street he usually wants to sniff, if there is another male dog around Bear may become Alpha & begin to bark. Bear does not tolerate cats, he will lunge, bark & growl at cats in the street. Bear has never bitten a person or another animal. BEHAVIOR: Bear is protective of his owners & will bark and growl if a stranger approaches owners suddenly. Bear allows owner to go near and touch his food bowl while eating, owner can take away bone & rawhide from Bear’s mouth without getting aggressive. Bear loves to be bathed & groomed. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW: Bear is best described as an affectionate & playful dog. His activity level is low & his favorite activities include going to the park & sun bathing. When owner is home, Bear will follow owner around. Bear enjoys playing with balls & hard chew toys. He enjoys playing fetch & chase. Bear would do best in a home with a yard. Bear has been kept mostly indoors & enjoys sleeping close to his owners. Bear eats dry food 1X per day from brand, Iams senior. Bears favorite treats are milk bones. Bear is house trained & wee wee pad trained. He is well behaved when left alone in the home & in the yard. Bear has never been crate trained. Bear is familiar with the following commands, sit & come. When Bear is left off a leash, he will wander off but will come right back. BEHAVIOR UPON INTAKE: Upon intake Bear appeared to be calm & relaxed. He allowed handling but became nervous when approached with the scanner. Bear scanned negative.

Bear previously lived with 1 adult. The owner stated Bear is relaxed and playful around strangers; he plays gently with adults. The owner mentioned Bear does not tolerate cats; he will lunge, bark and growl at cats in the street. The owner describes Bear as affectionate and playful. It was reported by the owner Bear is house trained and wee-wee pad trained. The owner stated Bear has low activity level and is well behaved when home alone or in the yard. At intake Bear was calm and relaxed but allowed all handling. During SAFER Bear came into the assessment room calm and relax, he was social towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Bear was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Bear growled and snapped at the assess-a-hand on food item, and he displayed no interest in toy and rawhide items. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with a rescue who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body tense, mouth closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 5. Dog tries to bite. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-to-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Bear greets the other dog briefly before moving off to explore his surroundings.
