10/30/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Bart is as shy as a violet. I know… he is a boy… but a very very timid one. Bart is a good looking Beagle with shining copper eyes. I have yet to hear him howling. Bart can be seen at the back of his kennel, trying to blend with the walls. With some coaxing, he will come out, accept the leash and go for a nice stroll around the block, even under the rain. Bart seems to be house trained and does not mark his territory. He is fine with a good toweling, some petting and sweet words. Playgroups with other dogs do peak his interest, but he prefers to stay away from the pushy ones. Gentle Bart needs a place to call home and a master to love. Come and meet him at the Manhattan Care Center. He would love to be yours.
10/28/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bart is fearful of the shelter environment he walks with a low and fearful body language. He was fearful and repeatedly attempted to get away from the handler during the assessment. Bart was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He was not interested in food, toys or rawhide. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. Bart is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Bart is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food. No interest. Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide 1. No interest.
10/28/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Bart greets the other dogs politely. He appears a bit overwhelmed with forward greeting from another dog. 10/30 update: Bart is initially uncomfortable and avoidant, but he becomes more comfortable. He begins to interact with other dogs when they solicit and may attempt to mount.
