07/03/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Barbie came into the care center as a stray, so we do not have information on his past behaviors in a home. At intake Barbie was reported to be very playful and affectionate. She was also said to have a very high energy level and was eager to greet everyone. During SAFER Barbie becomes aroused and mouths the leash and assessor hands (no pressure applied). When aroused Barbie is slow to de-escalate and requires intervention to help redirect her to more appropriate behaviors. She allowed the assessor to conduct all handling items without issue, but became easily over aroused during the tag interaction and became fixated on mouthing the leash requiring a distraction to calm her down. During the resources portions of the assessment Barbie was easy to handle when engaged with the food, allowing the assessor to easily push her out of the food bowl. She was not interested in the toys, and she was easy to handle when engaged with the rawhides. Barbie appears to be a high-energy dog that will likely do best with an experienced adopter with no young children who is prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation as well as appropriate outlets for her energy. The department recommends that Barbie be provided with proper leash training to address the mouthing of the leash when on walks and when aroused. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog becomes over aroused and repeatedly mouths the leash. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away or push her out. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish rawhide to you.
