06/07/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Balloon is a big, mushy goofball filled with so much charisma he could burst! He is incredibly waggy, both in his cage and out. Just looking his way is enough to get his tail going, and his whole back end goes with it! He radiates positive energy and even looks like he has laugh lines on his face! He is strong and excitable, but doesn’t seem to have a mean bone in his body. If he gets too jumpy, he is VERY easily directed into a “sit.” Balloon is very food-motivated and often sits without being asked in hopes of earning a treat! He waits patiently for them, the wrinkled sides of his mouth shake in anticipation (it’s adorable), and he’s working on learning to take them with less enthusiasm. Balloon seems to have housetraining and seems to like other dogs. He was found with another male, participates in playgroup, and maintained his wiggle when we met a small dog through a fence. When I have him off leash, he enthusiastically zooms up and down the pen, but remains very interactive with me, even encouraging me to join in! Balloon might seem like sort of a strange name for a dog, but I’ve come to realize it’s fitting. When I think of balloons I think of them as a source of joy, or of people toting them on strings to celebrations, and I can just imagine this guy being toted on leash by his person — his company certainly a source of joy and everywhere he goes, a party!
06/05/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Balloon came into the care center as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake he was reported to be relaxed when handled by a counselor. He was also reported to be friendly and allowed all handling during his medical exam. During SAFER Balloon was excitable, and maintained a loose and wiggly body when interacting with the assessor. He allowed all handling without issue, and he was easily distracted during the tag item. During the resources portion of the assessment Balloon was easy to handle when engaged with the food and did not show any interest in the toys. When engaged with the rawhide, Balloon held a firm grip and did not relinquish the rawhide, but his body was soft. Balloon appears to be very sociable, and has not displayed any concerning behavior while in the care center, so the department feels Balloon can be suitable for an “Average” experienced adopter. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needed coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy or rawhide, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Balloon is polite at the gate and engages in brief greetings with another dog but mostly explores the yard.
