A volunteer writes:  Surrendered by his family, Axel is trying to figure out why he’s with us and not them.  As we walk it’s clear he’s looking for them around every corner.  He’s a gorgeous boy in his shiny coat, long elegant legs and gorgeous markings.   The loud trucks and construction on First Avenue make him a bit uncomfortable so we take a quiet route around the park and back.  He seems to love other dogs, greeting all we met with a happy tail wag and in play group he’s social, engaging in gentle play and getting a bit overwhelmed with rowdier dogs.   Greeting a staff person he knows with a lovely stand up hug, Axel is ready to find a new family to love so where hugs can happen every day.

Another volunteer writes:

Axel is a handsome young boy of uncertain lineage..A Shepie ? A Dobie ? Who really knows ? What counts, though is that Axel is really good looking and a very sweet and loving boy as stated by his previous owner. Axel was purchased as a tiny puppy and lived happily with children of all ages. He would be very playful, super house trained and crate trained for long hours. He has no destructive tendencies when left alone and no handling issues. So, why was  wonderfulAxel relinquished into our care ? Axel seems to have a delicate soul. He does not take well to be left alone and would be wary of the unknown like strange dogs  and strangers approaching his home…Axel is a little hesitant to come out of his kennel. I insist and talks him to be leashed. We race to the yard. I understand why. He voids a river….His owner was right. No marking , though. That’s good. His tail is tucked under his belly but slowly it comes out. He paces. he is tense. he does not want treats and even roast beef. After a while, he accepts my caresses without flinching and even comes when i call him, sitting by me as i order.Axel is quite a gentle boy. Leashing him back is like going after the GingerBread man but eventually, we make it back to his den. Axel is all worth the TRAINING HE NEEDS to cure his separation anxiety(if it is the right “diagnosis”). I am a proud owner of a dog who had just the same and with the right help…we came out…winners…Axel is at the Manhattan Care Center, waiting for his new teacher and owner.
