08/02/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Arlo’ s sweet face and welcoming demeanor always made me want to take him out until I was allowed to spend time with him yesterday. What a gorgeous dog! Well built, healthy despite his little cold and clad in a perfect strawberry blonde coat. His eyes are intense, quite serious at times, like the world is weighing down his shoulders. He walks beautifully on the leash and eliminates without marking his territory. He sits on command and is quite obedient. He likes treats and takes them politely from my hand. Arlo loves tennis balls. He runs fast and jumps high to catch them, treasures them, chewing them to perfection and never breaking them apart. It is an art..He enjoys caresses, puts his head on my lap, relished butt’s scratches and even gratifies me with a kiss on my hand at the end of our session together. Arlo’s story is unclear to us….He is a handsome dog, friendly, sociable and showing affection. He could have some tendencies to want to keep his stuff like a two year old kid and it will be a question to teach him to share with grace like we all did with our kids or grandkids…. Arco is at the Manhattan Care Center, dreaming to make his new beginnings with you
07/31/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Arlo walked very well on the leash when outside before his behavior assessment and had friendly body language. He was very interested in playing with assessor during the assessment, and did become over aroused during certain portions of the handling items. When over aroused Arlo consistently tried to mouth the slip lead strongly and did not calm down easily. This could be due to a lot built up energy from a lack of exercise, which can cause this frustrated behavior. He proved difficult to position for the squeeze test, but relaxed on the second attempt and should no concerning behavior. He showed potential for possessive behavior over the rawhide item. For this reason the behavior department recommends that a potential adopter be prepared to provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address this guarding behavior should it manifest in a home. In addition, due to all behavior reviewed and observed while in our care the behavior department believes that Arlo should go to a home with a very experienced owner and no children. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item, and occasionally lip licks. Tag: 3. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. He becomes quickly over aroused at the end of tag, and mouths leash very strongly and did not calm down easily. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 4. Dog freezes. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog by rushing in with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip long.
07/31/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
SAFER ON LEASH DOG INTERACTION: Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog by rushing in with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip long. Arlo came to us as an owner surrender on 7/19/15. Arlo does come to us with a previous bite history for biting another dog that he was housed. Unfortunately, there is very limited information on how the bite occurred and the severity of the bite as well. However, on Arlo’s on leash dog interaction he had neutral body language when rushing to greet the other dog, but did not display aggression. Due to this information we believed that Arlo should go to a very experienced adopter that can safely manage and provide positive behavior modification if this behavior manifests in a home.
