SAFE – 04/22/15 ***LOVES TO CUDDLE***A volunteer writes “Where do I start with Arie? At first glance, she might not catch your eye. She is petite and dainty, a brown dog with the most worried look upon her face. But her body language suggests anything but worried when I approach her kennel. She is all wiggles, making soft eye contact with me, hopeful that I will take her out. Arie walks beautifully on the leash and seems very housetrained. She glances up at me periodically, checking in to make sure all is going right. Her tail never stops wagging, but not in the reckless way that a puppy’s tail would wag, it’s more of a contented back and forth. When I take her to the yard, she gets excited at the prospect of a ball. She is even delicate when she plays fetch. She softly goes after the ball, retrieves it and prances back to me. Before I throw it again, she rubs up against my legs, and solicits a good back scratch. She lets me take the ball easily from her mouth and throw it again. Though sometimes she is shy, my favorite part of spending time with Arie is when she gets cuddly. She loves to give kisses and seems to melt in your lap as you pet her. There’s really nothing about Arie that I don’t adore. I am quite sure when you meet her, you will feel the same exact way!”

04/03/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Arie came to us by way of owner surrender on 3/31/15. It was reported by the previous owner that Arie has lived with 16 adults and three children. She is described as a dog that got along with all family members and does get along with strangers, but needs time to become familiar with them. Upon intake Arie was very friendly and allowed all handling. She was a bit fearful and nervous when entering the behavior room, and maintained this behavior throughout the assessment. She did allow the assessor to conduct all tactile items of the assessment without displaying any signs of aggression. Arie did become very fearful during the tag test, turning away very quickly when touched with tense body language. She proved a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had soft body language. She displayed no interest in the toy or rawhide items on this portion of the assessment. The behaivor department believes that Arie will do best in an Experienced home with a family that is familiar on how to treat fearful behavior and can give her time to acclimate to them, and provide positive experiences in the home. During an interaction Arie must be approached slowly. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, and slightly fearful body language. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body a bit fearful, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 3. Dog repeatedly turns quickly away when touched, and repeatedly tries to exit. Dog is crouching, tail is tucked, mouth closed, body tense. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Dog licks hand. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with her tail down, body likely a bit stiff. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, Arie is initially hesistant but then warms up and is very energetic, playful and bouncy and enjoys rough and rowdy play.
