12/18/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
12/18/15 13:46 Basic Info: Apple A1060856 is a 2yr old neutered male white & tan AMPBT who was bought from a neighbor at 8wks old and is being surrendered due to the owner no longer having time for him and the resident cats not liking Apple. His last vet visit was in 2014 and he currently has no known health issues/injuries. Socialization: Apple needs time to warm up to people. Apple prefers to walk up to people on his own time, he doesn’t like when people approach him and attempt to pet him. He’s lived with 2 teenagers ages 12 & 17yrs and he’s relaxed, playful, gentle, exuberant and somewhat rough at times during play. He hasn’t lived with dogs but pulls the owner towards them when they’re walking on the street. Apple lived with 3 cats that are fearful of Apple due to his size & energy level when he would attempt to engage them in playtime. Apple had bitten a 14yr old in 2014 due to the teen playing too roughly with Apple upon their initial meeting and the teen pinning Apple to the ground. Behavior: During storms/fireworks Apple will bark. When someone attempts to touch/move his food/food bowl or treats Apple will snap but isn’t bothered if someone attempts to touch/move his toys, if you move him off of furniture of with being brushed. Apple struggles to get away during bath time. If someone approaches the home or family member Apple will bark. For A New Family to Know: Apple is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, mellow, excitable & independent with a high activity level. The owner loves his personality. Apple loves to play/run in the park. When the owner is home he follows them around. Apple enjoys ball & bones and games of hide & seek. He’s mostly an indoor dog who’s walked 2x a day where he only pulls on the leash when he spots another dog. Apple sleeps with the owner or the teens. He eats Pedigree 2x a day. Apple is housebroken but only has accidents if someone takes too long to take him out. When left alone he’s well behaved. Apple’s known commands are “sit”, “down” & “give paw”. Intake Behavior: When approached Apple had a low body posture and growled but when I got down to his level & spoke gently he appeared to loosen up a bit & allowed me to scan (+) for a microchip. The owner assisted with collaring, taking his picture & placing him into a kennel. During his stay he had to be taken out for cleaning and Apple was very slow & weary of his surroundings but didn’t mind being taken in or out of the kennel.
12/22/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Stunning in his sleek and gorgeously cared for cow print coat, Apple is a bit shy and needs a little bit of time to warm up to new people. Surrendered by his family as he wanted to play with the three resident cats who didn’t want to play with him he also lived with two teenagers with whom he played gently most of the time. Apple needs to approach people on his own time, and after our walk we got to know one another in the backyard pen. While he didn’t solicit affection from me he accepted petting and even jumped up on the bench to sit beside me!! He takes treats super gently with the very edge of his teeth, seems to like other dogs, and gives a quick chase to a tossed ball but doesn’t retrieve. We’re told he slept with his person or the kids, is well behaved when left home alone, barks during a storm, is housebroken, loves to play in the park, loves to play hide and seek (awwwww….), and knows ‘sit’, ‘down’ and ‘give paw’. Apple will do best in an experienced home without young children due to his initial shyness with people. A proven family dog, a dog who loves to play and cuddle with those he loves, he’s hoping that a new family or person will come meet him today. He’ll be the “apple of your eye”…..I just know he will!
12/20/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Apple came into our center as an owner surrender due to cats in the home not getting along with him, would attempt to play with the cats in the home but they were not interested. It is reported Apple needs time to warm up to people, preferring to approach at his own pace, he is uncomfortable if someone approaches him and attempts to pet him. Owner reports Apple lives with two teenagers age 12 & 17, playful, exuberant & sometimes rough play with them. He has not lived with dogs but pulls the owner towards any he sees on the street. Owner reports in the past Apple has bitten a 14 year old but this was due to teen playing too roughly upon 1st meeting Apple & pinning the dog to the ground. Owner states Apple will snap if someone attempts to touch his food but isn’t bothered if you touch his toys. During intake, Apple had a low body posture and growled at admissions counselor, but loosened up once spoken to gently. Apple walked nicely into the yard but would not return to the building, needed to be carried back inside. Apple allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body neutral. Apple stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, eyes soft, body relaxed. He was distracted & unresponsive during Tag game, requiring a significant amount of coaxing before approaching assessor at end of item. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Apple showed minimal interest in Toy, sniffing a few times and then turning away, though this may be due to environment as owner reports he is very playful. Apple did not approach the helper dog, turned to exit. The Behavior Team feels Apple would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have young children. Older children should have an in-depth interaction before considering adoption and it should be noted they should not initiate rough play with Apple. Apple will require a slow introduction where he approaches at his own pace and at his own comfort level. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, body relaxed, allowed head to be cupped Sensitivity: 1 Stands still, accepts touch, body relaxed Tag 2 distracted & unresponsive, requires significant coaxing to approach Squeeze 1/2: 1 Does not pull back paw Toy 1: Minimal interest, sniffs, then turns away Dog-dog: 2. dog does not approach helper, exits
12/23/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Apple is social and interested in greeting other dogs (male and female) but does not engage in play, offering correction if solicited. His owner reports that he has not lived with another dog but does pull toward them on the street. Based on this information the behavior department recommends that Apple have a pre-adoption interaction before being placed in a home with other dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Apple offers polite greeting then eventually attempts to mount. 12/24: Apple greets politely then keeps to himself. He offers a correction when solicited by a pushy dog. 12/26 update: Apple greets politely and then explores the yard. He offers correction if solicited play.
