04/12/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
04/12/15 09:01 Basic Info: Animal is a 3 year old neutered dog who has been stabbed before but has no other injuries or medical problems. Social Life and Personality: According to the owner he has been around children from 1 year old and up and is relaxed around them. He will approach children and sniff and lick them but he does not jump up or run around them. He has been around other dogs and when he sees a smaller dog he will approach, sniff, and then lay down to allow the smaller dog to jump on him and he plays gentle. When he sees a dog the same size as him he will be exuberant and run around with them. He is hesitant around some large dogs because when he was a puppy he was bitten in the face by a large dog. he does not have any aggressive behaviors towards them (i.e. growling, snapping, barking) but is more fearful until he knows they are friendly. He grew up with a cat and was relaxed and playful with him. He is house trained, kept mostly indoors, and has a medium to high level of energy. Behaviors: He has bitten one person before in January 2015 because a fight broke out in the home and when the people became physical he bit someone. This is also how he became injured, being stabbed by the person he bit. He has not bitten any other animal before. When owner would take food away from him he would continue to eat until the owner had the food off the ground. He did not growl, snap, bite, or bark when this was done. He is friendly when toys are taken away and enjoys being given a bath and brushed. He is friendly when unfamiliar people approach the house or family member. New Family Info: He knows the commands sit, stay, down, and give paw. He is used to brisk walks on leash or off leash dog parks. When off leash he will wander but come when called. He plays with ropes and plastic bottles and will play tug with them. He has not been crate trained and at home he either followed the owner around or he stayed in a favorite spot. He is not bothered by loud noises such as fireworks or thunder and was fed both wet and dry food. Intake behavior: During intake he approached extended hand and licked it. When Admission counselor bent down to scan the dog he approached and jumped up to greet. He allowed to be scanned (Positive), collared, pictured, and leashed without aggression. When given treat took gently from hand and listened to sit command. He would sit by admission counselor’s side throughout intake.
04/15/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: If anyone has earned himself a happy ending it’s Animal, a big ol’ teddy bear of a dog whose life thus far has not been all sunshine and smiles. This sweet, chilled-out dude has nothing but love for his fellow creatures and though he’s been through a lot and is still suffering from painful, untreated Entropion in his eyes, he holds no grudges against his former owner or anyone else. Animal takes what comfort he’s given and is thankful. He likes to be snuggled and offer little kisses to his human friends and when other dogs stop by for a visit his manners are amiable and impeccably polite. Animal makes the most effortless companion for an afternoon stroll as he walks calmly and slowly on leash, sniffing a little here and there before taking care of some pressing ‘business’, never pulling and always attentive to the whims of his walker. Sitting on command, coming when called, snuffling treats incredibly softly, all of this is second nature to our resident gentle giant and I’ve fallen so deeply in love with him it hurts. He may not be the prettiest boy at the Care Center but Animal has the most wonderful, beautiful soul. I hope that very soon he’ll find a special family to offer him the treatment and TLC he deserves and to love him for the rest of his long, happy life.

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Animal walks calmly on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. Animal was calm and relaxed during handling. He was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Animal became stiff and uncomfortable during paw handling snapping the assessor’s hand. He was a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had soft body language. Animal took the toy and rawhide away but had soft body language. He was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not playful. Animal was surrender to us. According to his previous owners he has been around children from 1 year old and up and is relaxed around them. He will approach children and sniff and lick them but he does not jump up or run around them. He has been around other dogs and when he sees a smaller dog he will approach, sniff, and then lay down to allows the smaller dog to jump on him and he plays gentle”. Animal show some concern during the paw (squeeze) part of the behavior exam growling and snap at the assessors hand. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 4. Dog growls and snap. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, body likely a bit stiff. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy: 1.
