12/01/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Waiting so patiently and quietly in her kennel, I couldn’t resist meeting this sweet girl. She’s as sweet as can be, burying her head into my chest for cuddles, reaching up to give me a kiss, showing off her sit and taking her reward treats gently. I had to leave our pen for a minute and when I returned she was waiting quietly, greeting me like her long lost best friend. Queen had an allergic reaction to something so she’s a bit “bumpy” at the moment, but nothing seems to itch her so that’s good news. Her gorgeous amber eyes and adorable pouty underlip all contribute to her soft gentle face. Sweet, gentle, affectionate and calm, Miss Queen was so delighted to have made a new friend, as was I. She’s a gem, hoping you’ll stop by to meet her today. Another volunteer writes: A beautiful lioness! That is who I see or think of when I look at Queen. She is not wild or fierce, though but a very loving and lovable pittie. Queen is always welcoming in her kennel, tail wagging and body wiggling. She looks quite serious but she is such a happy gal when she is in company. She stands on her hinds, puts her paws on my chest and kisses. The bench is a very favorite place. She hops on it as soon as we enter the pen and sits by my side for caresses and hugs. Queen can play too and will run after the ball, catch it and bring it back toward me. She loves treats and will sit for them. She does pull in the street, does her business and has the tendency to chase the birds. She seems to like other dogs and has been doing well in playgroups. Queen loves comforters. We always make sure to put one in her den, so she can roll and spread herself over it. I do hope that Queen will soon find a home with lots of pillows and thick blankiess to rest on and mostly a loving owner. Queen did well in her behavioral evaluation and is waiting for you at the Manhattan Care Center.
12/22/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Queen is demonstrating some reactivity to other dogs who pass her kennel, barking and lunging toward the front. This appears to be barrier reactivity; she is at times a bit tense and assertive when meeting other dogs off-leash, though her social skills appear to be improving and she is generally tolerant of and sometimes playful toward other dogs. However, due to the stress of reacting to each dog that passes for both Queen and for the other dogs in the room, we feel that placement into a stable home environment is in Queen’s best interest. Queen showed no concerns during the SAFER aggression assessment and responds well to her human handlers. We feel she is appropriate for an adopter with an average amount of experience, though we recommend slow introductions to other dogs and an adopter comfortable managing her in these situations. 11/24 SAFER: Queen pulls a bit on the leash. She was calm and relaxed during handling. Queen was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. She was not interested in toys. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have long lip or lip lick. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy 1: No interest.
11/21/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Queen has displayed assertive behaviors during interaction with other dogs. Queen may open up and engage in play with select dogs. Based on the observations made while in our care, the behavior department recommends that a pre-adoption itneraction be required for Queen before placement into a home with another resident dog. When off leash with other dogs Queen greets but is stiff; she stands tall and has a high wagging tail. She allows brief greeting but will then attempt to mount the helper dog. She will continue to mount and assert herself once correction is offered. 11/24: Queen stands tall during greeting. She continues to display assertive mounting throughout interaction. 12/2 update: Queen continues to exhibit these behaviors. When correction is offered for her mounting she escalates but quickly ceases when a handler intervenes. 12/3 update: Queen mounts a submissive female and may briefly engage in play when solicited. 12/4 update: Queen continues to mount the other dogs but will engage in play when solicited by a respectful female. 12/5 update: Queen engages in pushy play with other dogs. She corrects mounting and is tolerant of a boistrous female. 12/6 update: Queen is tolerant of soliciation from a playful female dog. She does not reciprocate with play. 12/8 udate: Queen engages briefly in play but is more interested in seeking attention from handlers. 12/9, 12/10: Queen continues to display these behaviors. 12/17: Queen greets and is a bit stiff, then shows interest in following and approaching a calmer male dog.
