07/13/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Isn’t she cute? A real china doll… pretty, petite and so perfectly made. Could she be lost? She has been so well cared for, she is healthy, the ideal weight and she owns the most lovely dress. And yet, she was found abandoned in a park. Alba is all excited, out of breath and happy in her pictures. Indeed, she got company, other dogs around her and a ball. Treats barely interest her. She wants action, meet and greet, play. Well, she was not that way when I first got her out of her kennel. Alba, indeed, was a little skittish, even a little scared, but when she saw a group of dogs entering and playing in an adjacent pen, she became all over again the spunky little girl she probably always was. Alba is said to be one year old. She is all puppy in her looks and actions. I think that she prefers to be with other dogs rather than to play with a ball but she surely can jump and run after one, given a chance. She is a real little athlete… all muscles in a girly girl body. Collapsing in her caretaker’s arms is what she does after all these activities. She is a very good snuggler. Precious Alba is at the Manhattan Care Center. If you want a lively forever best friend, a tiny young adult who loves dogs, balls and the warmth and safety of a master, here is Alba for you. Come and meet her soon.
07/12/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Alba was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up, licked hands and giving play bows. She allowed for all handling to be completed without issue. She followed the assessor during tag with a soft body and play bowed when the game ceased. Alba was a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had neutral body language. She took the toy away but had soft body language and kept a firm grip on the rawhide with a neutral body. Alba was brought to the care center as a stray; upon intake she was relaxed with lose body when approached by staff and would licked staff member’s hands and try to jump in handlers lap. Alba remained very friendly, loose, and wiggly throughout the assessment. The Behavior Department feels that Alba can go to an average home that understands she appears to be a high energy dog and would likely do best with an adopter prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. She would also benefit from obedience classes to help positively modify her tendency of jumping up as a greeting and to solicit attention. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft and wiggly body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is wagging with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, and play bows at the end of the game. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed or back. Food 2. Dog follows the dish with her tail down, body neutral. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the toy, and she is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Rawhide 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and body is neutral. She does not place her body between you and the rawhide. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs Alba is social and playful. She will engage in brief bouts of running play and when mounted she will solicit play.
07/12/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
***Alba is a social group greeter dog.*** When off leash with other dogs Alba is social and playful. She will engage in brief bouts of running play and when mounted she will solicit play. 7/15 update: Alba is social and will engage in gentle play with other playful dogs. 7/17 update: Alba is social, greets other dogs politely and will engage in gentle play with some dogs.
