9/1/15 12:50 Basic information: AJ is a 2 yr. old AM Pit bull mix. The Owner got him online as a puppy; he has owned AJ for over 2 yrs. The owner surrendered AJ because the can no longer care for him. AJ has no health problems and has never been taken to a vet. Socialization: Around strangers AJ is very Shy but sometimes playful. Behavior: The owner stats that AJ is not bothered when some moves her food or treats while she is eating, when someone takes her toys away or when someone disturbs her while sleeping. AJ likes to be brushed abut has never had his nails trimmed. When an unfamiliar person or animal approaches a family member or his home he may bark or growl at the person . The owner does not know how AJ is around loud noises such as storms or fireworks. For a new family to know: The owner describes AJ as friendly (sometimes) and playful with a medium activity level. His favorite activity is to play with his chew toy bone. In the home AJ tends to follow the owner around the house and is kept mainly indoors. AJ sleeps in the living room in a dog crate. AJ was fed Pedigree dry and wet food two times a day. He is house trained but sometimes has accidents in the home when not walked, when outside he goes to the bathroom on or around trees and grass. AJ knows the command “lay down”. For exercise AJ is used to brisk walks on the leash and three times a week and sometimes pulls on the leash. He is crate trained and is used to being in a standard metal dog crate on average 9 hours a day. Behavior during intake: AJ was very tense with stiff body and tail tucked between legs when approached by staff. AJ allowed to be, scanned (-), collared, photographed and placing in dog kennel only with the help of the owner.
09/05/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: AJ is certainly eye catching ! A rusty color Labrador mix, trim, elegant and trotting beautifully on the leash around the block. I love his floppy ears, his expressive eyes and his enigmatic smile…AJ was quite shy when I first met him and rather hesitant to be collared. I heard later that he is known to be shy with strangers. He entered the yard and the pen with circumspection and after relieving himself, elected a safe place in a corner, tail hiding between his legs. Food was of no interest to him but lots of coaxing lit up his face, animated his eyes and him altogether. He started moving around , responded to my calls and accepted gladly my petting. He was now sitting close to me , soaking from me what ever amount of comfort he could get…, his gaze, the reflection of a very gentle soul. He went back to his kennel much more at ease and content. Another volunteer took him out and he had already made progresses, coming slowly out of his shell. On the street, he meets other dogs uneventfully and in playgroups, he stays apart, preferring to stick with the humans.AJ is with us as his master lost his home.He lived with …6 cats though he was not too fond of them and spent a lot of time in a crate. He never mingled with children or other dogs. In a nutshell, AJ was very sheltered from the “real world” not even taken out that much for walks. AJ is a very attractive and endearing middle aged gentleman who can be found in our adoption quarters. He is beautiful, well mannered, gentle and loving and is dreaming of just one thing…Being a loyal pet again and may be get to know the world beyond his home, with the help of his new master or family. AJ is at the Manhattan Care Center, wishing upon a star. Another volunteer writes: Shy, sweet, gentle and all about his person, AJ was happy to make a new friend with whom he could cuddle. So unsure about this new world he finds himself in, he seeks comfort from his person. A nice walk to the park, a tail wag, and lots of kisses and I knew I had made a friend. Passing many dogs of all sizes without a glance, AJ is easy to be with. When I stopped to talk to someone with a dog, and AJ waited quietly by my side. AJ is ready to blossom in a home in which he’ll be given the opportunity to learn the world and make friends with it. Who is going to be the lucky person to give him that chance?
