09/23/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Addysen was found tied to a gate and a good Samaritan brought her home. Unfortunately the landlord doesn’t permit dogs so Addysen has joined us until she can find a new home. Likely housetrained she used the “facilities” as soon as we were out the door, and we took a walk around the block. She pulls on the leash so a harness and/or leash training will benefit both sides of the leash. Off leash in the yard she enjoyed a butt scratch, doing the ‘butt scratch shuffle’ to show her enjoyment! She comes when I call her, played with a squeaky toy and showed off her perfect ‘sit’ in exchange for gently taking a treat. She has a gorgeous prance/glide/walk as she investigates our pen, greeting other dogs that stop by. In group she greets others but as of this writing in her first group is not comfortable with prolonged interaction. Addysen takes a little while to warm up but once she does we exchanged some kisses and she loved being pet all over. She’ll need an experienced home where she can decompress and trust all on her own timetable. I hope that someone will give her the chance to show what a loving companion she can be.
09/23/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Addysen came to our center after a member of the public found her tied to a gate and kept her for a month. At first she barked when the Finder approached, but eventually warmed up. Addysen arrived at the center wearing a muzzle, the Finder stating he was afraid of her behavior around strangers as she sometimes would bark and lunge at people on the street, though she has never bitten anyone while in Finder’s care. Addysen was very nervous during her intial medical exam, tense and growling. Addysen warmed up here at the center with playgroup and enrichment. She did not allow handling by staff initially, but was very approachable for her SAFER assessment, wagging tail and licking assessor’s face. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands for Look item, soft wag. Addysen leaned in for Sensitivity item, body soft, ears and tail neutral. She played and jumped along during Tag game, briefly mounting at end of game, but easily redirected. Addysen gently pulled her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. She lifted her head and ceased eating during Food item. Addysen playfully engaged with Toy, keeping a firm grip with a loose wiggly body, at times bringing the Toy to assessor to interact. She needed some coaxing to engage with Rawhide, but then kept a firm grip and neutral body, but lost interest and relinquished. When off leash with other dogs, Addysen is uncomfortable but allows greeting. Due to previous reports of growling behavior and amount of time required to warm up, the Behavior Team feels Addyson may do best with an Experienced adopter with no children. She may do best initially in a calm, quiet, structured environment so she knows what to expect and can relax in her new home. It should be noted Addysen was social, playful, interactive, affectionate, and allowed all handling once she was comfortable and relaxed. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body. Tag: 1. Assumes play position and joins the game, indicates with popping of the body, jumping, huffing Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Gently pulls back her paw. Food 1.
