NAME: Adams
REASON FOR SURRENDER
The owner developed allergies from living with the dog.
RELATIONSHIP
Adams is a smalle black and tan wire haired mix. He is a little over ayear old and has been with his family for the last year.
PEOPLE
The owner states he is relaxed and playful around the kinds in the family. When he meets new people he is nervous at first, but once they apprach slowly and he smells them- Adams warms up quickly.
OTHER ANIMALS
Adams has only seen other dogs while outside on a walk. The owner states he will bark and lunge at them. He will do that same to cats.
PERSONALITY/HABITS
Adams is an inside dog with a very high activity level. He is a year and 4 months old. The owner states he is very playful once he gets to know you. He isn’t bothered when you touch his food bowl while eating, but will bark if you take his bone away. He will growl if you nudge him off the furniture. He is nervous when unfamilair people approach him or his family. He is well behaved when left unattended and enjoys playing with balls.
TRAINING
According to the owner he knows sit and he is potty trained; however he will mark inside the home.
MEDICAL
There are no medical issues at this time.
BEHAVIOR DURING INTAKE
At intake Adams was nervous and hidding his behind his owner’s legs. He responded better when the Admin. Counselor got down to his level and reached her hand out. After that he iniated play with the Counselor and rubbed up on her legs as a cat would. Adams allowed all handling and the Counselor to collar him, but she had to go very slow. The owner had to scan him as he was scared of the scanner hovering over him and the beeping sound.

Adams was reported to be relaxed and playful around the kids in the family, and when he meets new people he is nervous at first, but once they approach slowly he warms up quickly. He was said to have a very high activity level, and he is very playful once he gets to know you. The owner stated he isn’t bothered when you touch his food bowl while eating, but will bark if you take his bone away. it was also stated that he will growl if you nudge him off the furniture. Adams was reported to be well behaved when left unattended, and he is housebroken; however he will mark inside the home.
At intake it was noted that Adams was nervous and hid behind his owner’s legs, but responded better when the Admissions Counselor got down to his level and reached their hand out. After that he imitated play and allowed all handling, but the counselor still had to go very slow. During SAFER Adams was very sociable but became tense during the handling. He was not interested in the toys and rawhide items, but became stiff when being pushed out of the food bowl and snapped at the assess-a-hand. Due to this behavior placement with a New Hope partner is recommend, as well as a positive behavior modification program.
Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip licks.
Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needed coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor.
Squeeze 1 & 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back.
Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure.
Food: 5. Dog snaps at assess-a-hand.
Toy 1: No interest.
Rawhide: 1. No interest.
Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Adams enjoys interacting with people and is a good greeter with other dogs but is not interested in interacting beyond the initial greeting.

3/30 Update
Adams will attempt to mount male dogs but will mostly just wander the yard.
