05/27/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Helper Dog:A1031952 Abigail came into the care center as owner surrender, with limited information on her past behaviors in a home, but it she has been reported to get into a scuffle with a raccoon. During SAFER Abigail was very sociable and attention seeking when interacting with the assessor. She maintained a relaxed body posture during all handling items, and was playful during the tag interaction. During the resources portion of the assessment Abigail was not interested in the food item, and she was easy to handle when engaged with the toys and rawhides. During the dog-dog interaction, Abigail approached the helper dog with a loose body posture and a wagging tail appearing interested in interacting. Abigail appears to be very sociable and did not show any behavior concerns during SAFER, so the department feels Abigail can be suitable for an “Average” experienced adopter. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Squeeze 1 & 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Food: Inconclusive, dog is not eating. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish rawhide to you. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip neutral.

A Staff member writes:
Meet our sweet Abigail. She was surrendered to us because she was attacked by a raccoon and must undergo a 6 month DOH quarantine. She has already been through three months and can serve the rest in a foster home. She is a very sweet pup, scoring an average on her SAFER. DOH has given a few stipulations for the foster home that Abigail goes to. They are listed below:
– Foster home MUST be in NYC
– Abigail can live with other animals, but they must be up to date on ALL of their vaccinations (they must have received the vaccines more than 28 days ago)
– DOH must have health records and vaccine records for all animals living in the home before releasing Abigail
– The foster home must make regular phone calls to DOH to update them on Abigail and her condition during the rest of her time in quarantine.
Cage Exam 05/14
Hx: Recheck left nostril and lip – pt lost left nostril and part of her lip in a fight with a raccoon in Feb 2015;
S: Active in cage, barking
O: Site very erythematous but not bleeding, no discharge
A:
- Exposed left nostril and lip due to raccoon fight
Short-term prognosis: Excellent to good. At risk for upper resp illness (especially in shelter, which is a higher-risk location than at home with no other dogs) due to exposure of nasal passageways.
P:
- Continue to monitor. At risk for illness given exposure of nasal passageways.
- There is a Memo from 5/13/15 about client considering reclaiming pt. Follow up with counselors tomorrow to see if they’ve made any progress.
