12/26/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Love, love, love Roxy! A great trooper in the torrential rain and delighted to be rewarded with roast beef while being dried with a towel from nose to toes. What a patient gal! Roxy is a good looking girl, healthy and well groomed endowed with a welcoming face and a little rascal patch around one eye. She waits and lays leaning against the opening of her door. Her eyes are right on mine. She wants to make sure she is not forgotten. She is leashed of course in no time and walks gingerly, not forgetting to relieve herself. We shelter under an awning and Roxy shakes and darts 100,000 water pearls….Thank you, Roxy..I needed this…She comes when I call her, sits immediately on command and takes treats so politely from my hand, no jumping, no begging..A well behaved young lady…Once well dried, I ask Roxy on the bench and we smooch on a new blankie.. She is a very sweet and affectionate pooch who seems to have been a house dog, a family dog with some upbringing, good manners and sociability… I really like that. Roxy is a solid gal who will make, I think a wonderful companion and forever best friend. Come and meet her at the Manhattan Care Center. I hope you will be delighted as I am and make her yours…
12/24/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Roxy came to us as a stray, so we do not have any behavior information prior to what has been seen in the shelter. She was interested in exploring the behavior room and interacting with the assessor when entering the behavior room. She allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items without displaying any signs of aggression. However, Roxy did become a bit tense, stiff, and uncomfortable on the sensitivity, squeeze and flank tests. She proved easy to handle when chewing on the toy item, and maintained soft body language when the assessor attempted to take it from her. Due to Roxy’s stiff and tense body language during some of the handling items the behavior department believes that Roxy would do best with an experienced adopter with no children. When off leash with other dogs, Roxy is a bit tense during greeting, then ignores the helper dog during the rest of the interaction. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body tense, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. She indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog becomes quickly over aroused mouthing leash a bit strongly, but de-escalates very quickly. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Flank squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, begins to purse lips and becomes stiff Flank squeeze 2: 3. Dog closes mouth, begins to purse lips and becomes stiff Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, Roxy is a bit tense during greeting, then ignores the helper dog during the rest of the interaction.
12/23/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Roxy was initially uncomfortable during off leash socialization but began to warm up and engage in play with males and females. Because Roxy needed time to get comfortable in the care center, the behavior department recommends Roxy be allowed time to acclimate to her new environment before introducing her to a resident dog. When off leash with other dogs, Roxy is a bit tense during greeting, then ignores the helper dog during the rest of the interaction. 12/26 update: Roxy engages in bouncy running play with males and females. She offers bows and solicits running play.
