PROFILE:
Basic Information: Kiko is an altered 1 year 10 month old Chihuahua. The owner received him from his family at 6 months old and is surrendering him because of his attempts to bite people and family disagreement on how to raise Kiko. Kiko has seen the vet on a yearly basis and has no known health problems or injuries.
Social Life and Personality: Kiko has lived with 2 adults and children aged 2-7. Kiko does not play with children; he chases the children, growls, bites their shirts, and takes their toys. He has not lived with dogs but he barks and pulls on the leash when he sees dogs outside. He has not been solarized with cats. He is kept mostly indoors and has a very high activity level. His owner describes him as playful, pushy, confident, excitable, fearful and anxious.
Behavior: Kiko is partially house trained. He will use the bathroom outside and on training pads but will urinate on the bed, clothes, and towels when they are on the ground. Kiko will bark and bite people pant legs. The owner believes that Kiko barks too much. She also states that Kiko with chew on children toys, towels, and socks.
If Kiko’s owner touches or takes away his food bowl he does not mind but if anyone else does he will growl, snap, and attempt to bite. He is not bothered if his owner takes a bone from him. He is friendly if someone takes away a toy. If he is removed from the furniture he will jump back on the furniture. He is afraid of baths and cries during them. He is not bothered when brushed or woken up from sleep. He loves to be held. He begs to be held whenever his owner is home and especially when she takes him outside. He barks and attempts to bite unfamiliar people that approach his home and owner.

He has never been crate trained. When his owner is home he always follows her around. When off leash he stays close to his owner. He is nervous when he hears thunder or alarms. He is used to eating Beneful dry dog food but family members had a habit of feeding him people food. He either sleeps in is owner’s bed or dog bed.
During the intake, the owner was holding Kiko. When I moved in away way or looked at Kiko he would lean forward and bark at me. The owner set Kiko down to look in her purse. I was standing and did not move. Kiko was jumping up at his owner to be held. Kiko attention then turned to me; he ran oever and bite and held on to my pant leg. I backed away and he did not let go until the owner picked him up. He did not reach my leg.
SAFER: NEW HOPE ONLY
Kiko previously lived with 2 adults and children aged 2-7 years old. The owner stated Kiko does not play with children; he chases the children, growls, bites their shirts, and takes their toys. The owner mentioned Kiko has a very high activity level and is partially house trained. The owner describes Kiko as playful, pushy, confident, excitable, fearful and anxious. It was reported by the owner Kiko will bark and bite people pant legs, Kiko owner stated he does not mind his food bowl, toys and treats being touch but if anyone else does he will growl, snap, and attempt to bite. It was also mentioned by the owner Kiko barks and attempts to bite unfamiliar people that approach his home and owner.
At intake Kiko was barking and bit on the counselor pants leg, no handling was done at this time. During SAFER Kiko came into the assessment room nervous and trembling, he was a bit social towards the assessor with a slow approach, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Kiko followed the handler with his body low and fearful during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Kiko was easy to handle when engaged with the items. Due to some major behavioral concerns stated from the previous owner with Kiko not able to get along with children and strangers biting/chasing them, we feel that placement with a rescue who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time.
Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
