05/22/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Cucumber came into the care center as a stray surrender so his past behavior in a home is unknown. At intake he was reported to be a little tense but allowed handling. During SAFER Cucumber was sociable towards the assessor, and had a loose body posture during most of the handling items, but became a little tense on the squeeze test. He was calm and relaxed when playing tag with assessor. Cucumber was a bit stiff and could not be pushed out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. He proved easy to handle when chewing on the toy and rawhide items. Though we cannot say how Cucumber will behave in a home with another dog, the behavior department recommends that he go to a home without other dogs due to behavior observed in the shelter. Cucumber does have a previous bite history for biting another dog when approached very quickly. The behavior department believes that Cucumber can go to an experienced home that can provide positive behavior modification. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. He indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Dog follows the dish, his tail between his legs, ears are forward. His body is a bit stiff. Dog does not lift his head from the bowl when hand is applied to his cheek. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly.
