12/22/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Criss is a good looking gal, well made, healthy, well nourished and dressed in a perfect ebony coat.. What does a gal of her lineage do in a kennel? She can not fathom….Criss is therefore a little upset in her den. She wants out, stretch her legs, do her business in the open. Her face is stern and of “circumstances”…She looks at me like saying :”what are you doing, girl ?” when I am fixing a scarf around her neck… Get me out of here, back to where I belong or somewhere where I will be a pet again but this time…forever…Criss loves treats, will search my goodies bag for more (she is a determined gal) but will also sit on command for them. She is strong and pulls on the leash. Having met no dog or bird on our way, I can not at this point attest to her likes and dislikes…I need to see a little bit more of Criss and will have more to say about her. Meanwhile, she is waiting at the Manhattan Care Center, so hoping to get her life back together…. Another volunteer writes: It is often said that black animals are overlooked in a shelter environment and Miss Criss is simply not going to let that happen. She stands up in her kennel as I pass, wagging her tail and imploring me to notice her…..and I do! Happy to be out for a walk she pulls a bit on the leash, looking up at me often as we walk. In a backyard pen she explores easily, isn’t interested in toys or balls, comes when I call her and while a bit hand shy is happy to make friends and be pet. Criss enjoyed some treats which she takes gently, poses for photos like a pro, and loves being scratched under her chin closing her eyes with the enjoyment of it all. Criss has a wonderfully expressive face….you’ll always know what she’s thinking and I love that. Her coat gleams, her weight is perfect for her size and let’s put that myth aside about black dogs. Come prove it wrong and meet her today.
12/21/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Criss came into our center as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. She was friendly during intake, immediately approaching counselor to accept treats and allowed all handling. Criss held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, body soft, tail wagging. She stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body neutral, tail wagging. Criss followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft, jumping up light and playfully at end of game. She did not pull back her paw on both Squeeze attempts. Criss showed no interest in Toy. Criss became overly aroused during her dog to dog interaction. She barked at the helper dog when approached the door, rushed in with hackles raised, alot of lip licking, tail above spine level. The Behavior Department feels Criss would do well in an Experienced home. She may benefit from being the only resident dog. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is wagging with relaxed body posture. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, jumps up playfully at end. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not pull back paw, tail wag. Toy 1. No interest. Dog – dog 3. Dog approaches the helper dog by rushing in with her tail high, head tall, lip lick.
12/22/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When approaching the gate for introduction, Criss stiffens, stands tall, hackles raised, then begins to growl and bare teeth. The behavior department advises against immediate placement into a home with dogs for Criss at this time.
