09/14/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bishop came to our center as a surrender from a temporary home that kept him 7 weeks. It is reported he is gentle and playful with adults, but a little timid of active children, sniffing them but not engaging in play. It is reported he becomes tense if he sees another dog and is hesitant to walk on leash outside. Bishop was calm during intake, loose wiggly body when approached by admissions counselor, allowing all handling. He easily jumped into the kennel and lay down calmly. Bishop pulled hard on leash during his relief walk, but did not appear fearful as previously reported. Bishop entered the SAFER assessment room social and wiggly. He held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, body soft, tail wagging. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft, tail wag, open mouth panting. Bishop followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft, slightly distracted in the room. He did not pull paw back on both Squeeze attempts, licking assessor’s hand. Bishop lifted his head and ceased eating when assess-a-hand approached the Food bowl. He took Toy away playfully, loose and wiggly. Bishop kept a firm grip on Rawhide, body a bit stiff. When off leash with other dogs, Bishop will greet and show brief interest but then become anxious and pace. The Behavior Team feels Bishop would do well with an Experienced adopter that does not have young children. Any older children should have an in-depth interaction before considering adoption. He may do well initially in a calm, quiet, structured environment so he can relax and know what to expect in his new home. Once comfortable, Bishop is very social, soft, and wiggly. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail wagging, open mouth panting. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, a bit distracted by other stimuli in the room. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not pull back paw, licks hand. Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away or push him out. Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Rawhide: 3. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. His body is a bit stiff.
07/28/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Bishop greets other dogs politely and may engage in play with some dogs. However, he may not take correction well and has become increasingly anxious when out in the yard. Based on his behavior in playgroup, The Behavior Department recommends Bishop be given time to decompress outside of the care center environment before interacting with other dogs. A home with another dog can be considered if a slow, supervised introduction is feasible within the home. When off leash with other dogs, Bishop greets politely and attempts to solicit play. He may escalate slightly when corrected. 8/4 update: Bishop engages briefly in play, offers appropriate corrections but becomes anxious when the other dog is pushy when playing and attempts to exit the pen. 8/6 update: Bishop is social and bouncy, engaging in running play with a social female. 8/7 update: Bishop engages in rough running play. He may overreact when corrected and offer an over correction. 8/8 update: Bishop greets politely and is interested in the other dogs but does not engage in play. Over time he becomes anxious and attempts to exit the yard. 8/12 update: Bishop allows a brief greeting, but he is anxious and spends most of his time attempting to exit the yard. 8/20 update: Bishop greets briefly before exploring his surroundings. He is tolerant of mounting. 8/21 update: Bishop greets the other dogs politely but spends most of his time pacing or trying to exit the yard. He may become barrier reactive with some dogs. 8/28 update: Bishop greets well and is interested in the other dogs, but he quickly becomes anxious and attempts to leave the pen. 9/3 update: Bishop solicits play briefly before exploring his surroundings. He will offer appropriate correction when mounted. 9/8 update: Bishop greets the other dog briefly but is anxious and spends most of his time pacing the pen. 9/9 update: Bishop is anxious but will greet and show interest before pacing in the pen. He will offer correction when mounted. 9/11 update: Bishop continues to exhibit these behaviors when socializing with dogs off leash. 9/15 update: Bishop may greet the other dogs briefly but is anxious and spends most of his time trying to exit the pen. 9/16 update: Bishop greets politley but becomes overwhelmed and will overreact when another dog approaches him to sniff. 9/27 update: Bishop greets politely and is interested when play is solicited but does not engage.
