A volunteer writes: I walk over to Aries’s kennel and I see such a sad, handsome face. I talked to him and coaxed him out. We went to the backyard. He comes towards me with his tail tucked tightly under his big body, in a few minutes he warms up to me and thinks that his big body is going to fit in my lap LOL, he even made it fit!!! Aries is so sweet he even smiled for a selfy with me, then kissed me all up!!! Aries is all love and sweetness he’s just uncertain about his current situation. Please consider giving Aries a forever home he so deserves. Come to SIACC and meet him he’s waiting.
Another volunteer writes: Aries has been at the shelter a month now and has made a lot of doggie and people friends but is still waiting for his forever home. Aries loves to play fetch he can fit 2 balls in his mouth at one time… and can keep track of them both when thrown simultaneously (that’s quite a talent). Aries also enjoys play group and is a play group favorite because of his mild manner with the other dogs. Come meet Aries at Staten Island ACC, he’s waiting.
Social Life & Personality:
Aries comes from a home with children and for the most part he interacted with them in a gentle manner. But there are times where he can be a bit excited and be somewhat rough when engaging in interaction with children due to his size. Aries has also been around other dogs (Large & Small) and according to the owner he interacted with them in a gentle playful manner. Aries has been around one cat and one cat only but according to the owner they got along just fine. Aries is an indoor only dog that is house broken. Aries is described to be friendly, playful, and excitable with a very high activity level.
Behavior Issues:
Aries has never bitten a person or another animal according to the owner. Aries doesn’t have any guarding issues when it comes to food and toys. These items can be given and taken away with no issues according to the owner. However Aries will growl if you attempt to take away a treat that has been given to him. Aries takes well to grooming agents like receiving a bath and having his coat brushed. Aries is afraid of having his nails trimmed and for this reason it can be a struggle when trying to trim his nails. He won’t snap, growl, or bite but he will continuously pull his paws away or attempt to flee.
For a New Family to Know:
Aries knows all sorts of commands like sit, down, stay, come, go, speak, give hug, and quite a few more (No Attack Command). He went for slow walks on a leash and let out into the yard for daily exercise. Aries enjoys all sorts of dog toys and will play with just about anything. When in the home Aries is the type to follow you around seeking attention. When left alone in the home Aries is well behaved and this applies to him being left in the yard as well. Aries was brought up eating dry food and the brand the owner gave was Eukanuba.
SAFER
Aries was brought into our center as an owner surrender. It is reported he lived with adults and two toddlers. Owner reports moving into a very small apartment crowded apartment which is having him knock household items and the children over unintentionally. Owner reports Aries has been around other dogs of various sizes and interacts with them in a gentle playful manner. It is also reported he interacted with one cat and they got along. Owner states Aries will growl if attempting to take a treat away. Owner describes Aries as housebroken, friendly, playful, and excitable with a very high activity level. Upon intake, Aries was social and friendly, loose body. Aries walked nicely on leash for his relief walk, no pulling. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body soft, tail wagging. Aries leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, tail wagging. He followed at the end of the leash for the first two passes, then engaged in play, jumping and playing along with assessor, but easily settled at end of game. Aries did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts, tail wagging. He calmly allowed the Food dish to be moved, and lifted his head out of the Food bowl easily when assess-a-hand was applied to her cheek. Aries took Toy away with loose body. He took Rawhide away, body neutral. When off leash with other dogs, Aries was a little unsure at first but eventually engaged in brief jumping play and will often wander the yard with the company of another dog. Due to owner’s report of growling if attempting to take away a treat, the Behavior Team feels Aries would do well with an Experienced adopter. He may benefit from obedience classes to learn body awareness in relation to jumping up and unintentionally knocking over people and things in small spaces, as well as learning the command ‘drop it’ and trade up games in regards to owner reported possessiveness of longer lasting treats.
